looking to convert a pugsley to IGH and im thinking alfine 8 will be the most affordable option.

I fitted Alfine 8 to a previous bike and was happy enough with it I would consider the new di2 hub but it appears all the gubbins needed to run it i.e motor, shifter, battery etc will make it a pricey option. Does anyone know if the Di2 hub can be used with a manual shifter initially so i could upgrade to di2 at a later date if needed.

Cheers

Pretty sure you could buy the di2 gear selector separately, at least you could when it came out. I thought it was for the 11sp version though - although I guess it's just software so could be change in the junction box.

It's the same hub as the non di2 version just with a di2 motor unit changing the gears.....

Cool thats what i thought, so initially i could just get the cable shifting parts and run the di2 hub the same as a standard one until ive got the di2 bits together?

Dont know about alfine 8 going from di2 hub to mechanical but the 11 going to electronic from mechanical its not possible to adapt one to the other acording to here

https://bikeshed.johnhoogstrate.nl/bicycle/drivetrain/shimano_alfine_inter_11/

Adding Electronic Shifting to a Mechanical Hub

If you already own a bicycle with a Shimano Alfine hub (SG-700) and want to know if it is possible to upgrade to electronic shifting there is bad news: According to Shimano it is not possible to use the motor unit. The reason is that the hub (SG-700) contains a return spring. When shifting down, the shifter pulls the cable and tensions the spring. When shifting up cable tension is released and the spring pushes the hub in the right gear. With the Di2 hub (SG-705) the motor unit turns into different direction for shifting up and down. It would require more power for the motor to shift down and tension the spring.

*ad creeping in*

I've got a Di2 Alfine 8 hub going spare, black, 32hole.

Had one on my commuter for ages, gears started 'slipping' a couple of weeks ago. Imediatley feared the worst and confirmed by googling that hub internals shot, so bought a new hub. Really didn't fancy a wheel rebuild so swapped the internals over. This did not fix the problem. Has a new chain and jockey wheels on the tensioner, but still doing it, waiting on a new sproket. Only other possibility left is some sort of alignment issue.

So, on the basis that the problem is the same whichever hub internals I use I guess both must be fine. I'm not going to swap the internals back as that's a PITA. So, for sale is a brand new hub shell with 18 month/7k-ish miles old internals.

Sold as seen. I believe it to be fine but please be aware of the above. I'm near Edinburgh/Galashiels/Glentress but will be in Fort William 18th-22nd if you want to have a look at it and satify yourself as to the condition, I have not yet solved my problem.. £100 posted/£90 collected (it's the more expensive SGS-S505 version)
