a mate just bought a Knog scout although hasn't reported back to me about it yet! Looks really good though, it's a 3rd party device that uses AirTag network, built into a bottle-cage mount but also combines a tamper alarm/siren, LED battery status indicator & USB charging so plenty of features to justify the extra cost.

That looks good, only issues are that we’ve already got AirTags, and I’d be worried about child setting off the alarm and not being able to deactivate it?

yeah, looks like it only works with the phone app, so if they don't have their own phone it's a no-go!

(I personally have no problem using up excess AirTags, got about a dozen on everything that I normally have to hunt for 😂 all sets of keys including spares, asthma medication, Apple TV remote etc!!)

I've a Kong Scout and it seems to pretty similar to an AirTag in every way regards tracking. No need for kids to have a phone, it just hits any Apple phones in the vicinity to report location (same as the AirTag).

It has the alarm functionality but you have to turn it on / arm the alarm. If you don't, it doesn't set make any noise etc.

Though, if you've already got a tag and looking to attach it to the bike, me advocating the Scout doesn't really help. Sorry.

only issue with the airtag is that it isn't actually that reliable for location.

Are you sure, AIUI only Airtags can use the Airtag network.

I have a knog Scout thing and it doesn't appear as an Airtag on my iPhone, you have to use it's own app, which relies on it being within BlueTooth range of the phone.

Possibly, I've not configured something, but as far as I can tell it's just a movement alarm with bluetooth..

Just tried to locate my Scout in it's app and it popped up the Airtag page in Find My, but doesn't seem to appear on it. Maybe I need to add it manually...

yep, Apple opened up the protocol a while back to approved 3rd parties, to all intents it is an AirTag & functions exactly the same as an Apple one.

They make it extremely clear on their website that it works in the same way an AirTag does! (using Find My app, etc)

https://www.knog.com/products/scout?_pos=1&_sid=02668b5cf&_ss=r

(Range etc may differ and I know some of the cheaper options lack the precise UWB location function which Apple AirTags have)

only issue with the airtag is that it isn’t actually that reliable for location.
yeah, that's why I think the tamper alarm on the Knog thing is probably going to be just as useful if not more so!

It's really not very loud at all. In a busy street, no one would notice it.

Rather unimpressed to be honest.

The bit that could be good is their App beeping if someone moves your bike, but BT range is so poor that in most cafes we go to, it disconnects as soon as we go inside, even though the bike is only a few metres away. I've stopped even bothering to set it now, as as soon as we go inside it stops working....

Can confirm it's in Find My - Knog App opens Find My if you try to locate it, I think. Are you all updated etc?

It was very reassuring after we'd landed at Edinburgh a couple of weeks ago.
