Ages ago I flew with someone (can't remember who) that would not allow bikes in bags or boxes etc. you just had to turn the bars. I know this is a bit risky but...
I am planning to do an A to B ride in May and don't want the faff of having to find a box at point B when I need to fly home

Why not just find a bike shop at point b and ask them to hold a box for you?

Some airlines provide a box/sell you one. Not much use to you but Qantas do so you can ditch your bike shop one at point A and get a new one at point B.
