That's rubbish. Especially for a smaller outfit.

They’d just had a delivery and had new builds ready to ship. Might be bad luck but maybe they were scoped out. There’s only a few hundred in existence so not easy to shift on without being noticed.

I thought that. Seems like a planned/timed job, but they've picked a brand that's really visible with limited numbers. Doesn't seem that well thought out.

Really feel for Ed, he's a lovely bloke.

Just seen it. Gutted for Ed, hope it gets sorted and people get hold of their bikes. Great company.

Not sure why you would think it odd?

Only if they are going to try and sell them to enthusiasts rather than chav-esque punters

Or we assume most people who rob bikes do much in the way of thinking.

I often wonder if bikes like these get sent off to the rest of Europe like Germany,Poland, France etc. It would not take long to get them across the channel and if they are put on e-bay in those countries they will be less likely to be found by the victims who will be searching Facebook, gumtree, ebay etc in the UK.

Makes sense. I remember a couple of years ago it turned out most of the bikes pinched around Sheffield were ending up at a certain market day in Hull (Friday?). Wouldn’t be a stretch at all to get them on a ferry and out of the country to sell. While stolen bikes had an accepted £50 price it would never have been worth it, but if recent ‘second hand’ FS bikes can easily be worth over £1k and that’s known, then it surely changes the behaviour of thieves.

I think that's probably waay beyond the abilities of the sorts of idiots who break into places to rob bikes.

I think it's probably best to keep an eye on the usual gumtree and ebay ads over the next few weeks. Hopefully some-one will see one and alert Ed/ Airdrop to it

Dunno. If you can cope with getting a Transit full of bikes to a town with a port it really doesn’t seem a hard step to get them in a container heading for Europe.

There are bike thieves who are basically bagheads but there’s too much money in them now plus cars are getting harder to rob for more sophisticated criminals to not be taking an interest.

Anyone who thinks bike thieves are idiots is vastly underestimating them. After all they outsmarted the owner and got their stuff.

To get in and out of somewhere, quick enough to be undetected and with enough equipment to make it worthwhile takes a lot of forethought and planning.

If they were smart they'd have nicked the parts.

A bit more detail on the stolen Edits:

The first is an Edit v2 frame in Large/Black with gold decals, a Cane Creek DBcoil IL rear shock and 500lb Valt lightweight spring.

The second is an Edit v2 frame in Small/Raw with black decals, a Monarch Plus RC3 rear shock and black Hopetech headset.

Both were brand new and in Airdrop branded boxes with TNT labels attached.

Looking at South Yorkshire Police's Facebook page, you could easily arrive at the conclusion that mountain bike thefts (irrespective of value) are not a major concern for them:

However, newsworthy and notable recent thefts include a Seat Leon and some scaffolding planks ...

No wonder the local scumbags doing all this bike thieving think they can get away with it ...

Really hope Airdrop get some progress with SYP

Digby on the warpath again...

The car will worth what, 10k more than the bikes and the scaffolding is someone's business.

Bikes are a toy and treated as such.

Odd as in they are a very niche brand who just got a delivery in. There can only be a handful of people who would have known when that delivery was going to arrive.

Maybe so........ doubt it tho to be honest.

They certainly shouldn't be to easy to shift on at least.

It's happening far too much in Sheffield at the moment. A dude had his Transition nicked in the last day or so from the garage whilst he was in the house.

It was one of Podge's mates who sadly had the Transition stolen

It's happening far too much in Sheffield

yes - it is .. .I've had two break-ins in the past month. My out of pocket costs so far are way in excess of a Seat Leon, (not to mention the sense of violation at having your home & property broken into) but South Yorkshire Police don't even attend the scene anymore. I had to raise an official complaint with the first break-in. I'm still waiting for a response on last night's (I was hit just after Podge's mate).

Bikes are a toy and treated as such

maybe ... but someone's home is someone's home. Have a little empathy Podge - your mate was robbed whilst he was having his evening meal.

There was a van pulled in Germany a few years back. Cop noticed a Lancaster bicycle shop sticker on a bike and held van and driver. Turned out to be eastern European bike stealing ring operating out of Morecambe.

A '10' plate Leon is hardly going to be worth £10k more than a pair of BNIB FS bikes. Quite possibly actually less.

No one said it was a 7 year old Seat plus it's much easier to trace a car than some bikes so it's an easier "win" for the police.

I have lots of sympathy for James, he rides way more than me and gets way more out of it too, I've offered to design and build a steel cage for his shed using work's stock and my free time, but I also have sympathy for an over stretched police who genuinely do have bigger things to be dealing with.

I really do hope that SYP don't prioritise their workload based on 'quick-wins' and picking the 'low hanging fruit' ...

That's kind of you - but you do realise how quick the angle grinders these scumbags are tooled up with can cut through that kind of steel don't you? Once inside the shed/garage/outbuilding etc they can close the door and cut through pretty much anything in seconds.

And before anyone chimes in, keeping your bikes in your house isn't a deterrent either as they don't have any qualms about breaking into that.

Trust me ... they will be back for the parts ... their van was probably already pretty full from all the other bikes they'd nicked on Thursday ...

I have lots of sympathy for James

I said empathy rather than sympathy ... and whilst I can't speak for James I can tell you [some] of what's going through my mind:

- what if I'd disturbed them whilst taking the rubbish out to the bins
- or worse, what if the missus or my daughter disturbed them whilst taking the rubbish out to the bins
- what if I returned from a night ride to find them breaking in ...

Judging by the foot prints on my neighbour's garden they are big fellas. One I might be able to tackle but two?

These ***ts are proper tooled up ...

Or we assume most people who rob bikes do much in the way of thinking.

Well they don't despite the obvious expert opinion they're all rocket scientists and plan heists to the nth degree,

Top and bottom is they will batter you to within an inch of your life if caught and don't actually GAS much in the way either . It's that simple they are going to take what they want

One of the lads I worked with in Sheffield right next to the transport police hub had his bike thievesd after over a month of on off catching them in the act and CCTV clocking them and number plates . Eventually about 10 turned up in a van ground through the framework it was shackled to and took it. When challenged the knives and bats came out and a brick was put through the office window , takes some real planning that does .

To be totally fair, yes, yes they did. SYP posted a picture of the car making a getaway from cctv withthe full reg clearly in view and a sad conversation below between the ex-owner and others about how he was unlikely to see it again as it would be in Doncaster, partsed up and in containers by now.

FWIW, the car was taken as part of a house robbery where the keys were taken, which also I guess illustrates that keeping bikes indoors isn’t necessarily keeping them safe. Also, people in the comments were expressing surprise SYP had done more than call back with a crime number for the car too.

Bike crime is costing big money but being passed over because of preconceptions that they’re cheap toys. We really aren’t helping ourselves by holding on to this idea ourselves, too.

Spent today doing some repairs and upgrades and I have to agree with Digby that they must be relatively strong blokes judging by how they managed to bend a pretty hefty hasp out the way.

- what if I'd disturbed them whilst taking the rubbish out to the bins

This is also bothering me, if they are ok breaking in at 7.30 at night with all the lights on (as well as both neibours) then they are either very desperate or confident that if confronted they can deal with it.

Thanks to the usual email lot, Digby, James and Ryan at pedals and also Steve at Bike security, all have gone well out of their way to help out and give advice.

No sign of the police at all as of yet btw.

Especially gutted for ed (and his customers) at airdrop also.
Hopefully some of these bikes can be found.

No sign of the police at all as of yet btw.

I'm disappointed but not surprised - when we were robbed a few weeks ago, it took them 3 days to provide a Crime Reference Number - despite their supposed policy of responding within 24 hours. I raised a complaint and was phoned with an apology blaming a new IT system.

Both the Insurance Company and Loss Adjusters couldn't believe it.

I reported the 2nd break-in to the police shortly after it occurred Thursday evening and despite being assured that the 'Crime Bureau' would be in touch I haven't heard anything and it's now nearly 3 days again. I don't even have a Crime Reference Number for this report.

I'm fully aware of the pressures on SYP - my early comments about the Seat and planks were because of the apparent disparity in reporting crimes:

I'm aware of at least 12 mountain bikes that have been stolen within a couple of miles radius of my home within the past few weeks, but looking at SYP's Facebook and Twitter feed, back to the beginning of December I couldn't find a single, solitary mention of mountain bike thefts, whereas other thefts, both big & small are mentioned ...

Granted, some people might not want it advertising that they have had high value items stolen from their property but the only reference I could find was back in August last year when SYP were warning bike owners to be vigilant.

According to the Sheffield Star:

Sheffield Wednesday's home games proved easily the most costly to police, at more than £430,000, though the Owls did provide nearly £200,000 towards that sum.

So at least I know where some of my Council Tax is going ...

James - I'll message you again later with some of my other thoughts regarding security, but sadly I'm coming to the conclusion that the hobby that I love very much has made me a direct target for the local Criminal fraternity and compromised the safety of my home and family - and I'm struggling to find a solution that doesn't mean not having a bike - and that means the ***ts have won ... 🙁

So a cautionary tale to residents in NW & SW Sheffield: If you have a mountain bike, they know about you, have probably already scoped out your property and you are no doubt on their 'to do list'.

Keep 'em peeled ...
