Anyone gone to coil? I went cane creek dB coil on the reign and it felt amazing compared to the basic shock it came with. My new firebird 29 came with a fox x2 air shock but I couldn't get the feel right. Moved to a ohlins tx coil and it feels incredible too. I'm loving the coils
Yes.
The Fox X2 air on my Starling felt great compared to the RS Monarch on my previous bike.
I got a good deal on a used Push Elevensix so thought I'd give coil a go, knowing I could punt it on if I didn't like it.
The performance difference is quite remarkable, so plush and composed. I'm a convert.
Yes. My Jeffsy came with a DPX2 and I've recently changed it for a Cane creek dbcoil il. Loadsa grip, hugely improved small bump performance and no noticeable affect on climbing even with the climb switch off.
Yep, you know it. Went from a DPX2 on the Mach6 to a EXT Storia Loc v3 on the Hex. Oh my, what a difference. Bike glides over high frequency bumps, and gives more support when it gets really rough. I just need to find a fork that can match it.
To add a little balance here, I was all aboard the coil hype train with an Ohlins TTX coil shock on my capra. I just switched to a commencal clash with an air shock, which I expected I would be replacing, but I'm pleasantly surprised to find there's not a massive difference between them.
OK it's a different bike so it's not comparing apples to apples but it shows air shocks are getting there. The shock on my commencal is a super deluxe ultimate (what a stupid name).
I went to coil on my Capra, cos it was a cheap replacement to my worn/tired/hard to come by air shock and I thought it may improve things for me - which it indeed did. Rear end of my bike which is super progressive always felt harsh in the chop ,bucky and spikey to me,going to a coil softened and improved all the above.
I've fitted a DVO Jade X coil to my Rail. It's such a huge improvement! Just upgraded my Yari forks with low friction seals, 170mm 2021 air shaft and Charger 2.1 RC2 in the hope they'll be a match for the shock.
I'm about to join the coil hype train, new bike will have coil front and rear with a super Deluxe and a cane creek Helm MkII coil up front.
I'm excited to try something different.
Trust in coilys dumbot bud- seriously
The pivot's travel is very progressive, so with the air shock you need to be matching that with the required volume spacers, and sag, if you've moved to a coil did you get the progressive spring to match the travel?
If the Pivot's leverage curve is progressive then it should suit a standard spring.
It's not progressive
Standard vault spring from tftuned
X2 as standard on the HB160 was really good. DVO Jade I put on is superb.
A big plus for the DVO is that it (should be) easily home serviceable, unlike the X2.
I am a coil convert - I find it offers all the benefits described in your first post Jedi.
😁😁😁😁
I'm coil on both my eeb & analogue bikes. I can agree they certainly feel nicer for sure.
What I can't certainly say however, is it faster?
I've run coil forks on my last 2 bikes and wouldn't chose to go back, though the damping on my Ribbon is apparently not as good as the new air forks.
Just purchased a secondhand Evil offering with a 160mm fox air fork and a 140mm Push Elevensix shock. Getting out this afternoon for maiden spin. Current bike is Evil following with 130mm \ 120mm air so be interesting to have coil AND 30mm extra travel but basically the same bike otherwise sp a fairly good comparison.
G1 is air front, coil rear (Storia). Storia is hands down the best shock I've had, traction, support, everything, but then it is a grand....
Enduro started off with Air(stx)/Air(stx), then Air(stx)/Coil(ttx), Coil(ttx)/Coil(ttx) and then Air(Lyrik)/Coil(ttx). The coil/coil setup was great as smashing through stuff, but Lyrik was a better trail fork and the TTX remained as the x-wing enduro eats shocks for fun.
Often the coil shocks will have a better damper than the air shock they replace, which will be a big part of the performance difference which is seen. There is also the fact that the shock that comes stock on the bike will rarely be a match for the rider and a retune might be what it takes.
If I were going to be fitting a Fox X2/DHX2, I'd probably fit the air shock, as its far easier to setup and you can easily change the spring rate, whereas with a coil, its more of a faff.
I use coil. I also like air. i wonder what the percentage of coil to air use is in EWS and WC downhill? I would hazard a guess that most use air, partly for ease of adjustability in racing around the world. Dunno though
I find there is less of a difference with coil fork compared to air than there is for rear shocks...
Been running coil for a couple of years now, not only prefer the extra grip and monster truck feel, but I also find on longer rides that I'm much less beaten up and fatigued too.
Recently sent the coil shock off for servicing and a tune so put the air shock back on - it was night and day how much less composed the bike felt.
