hi, im thinking of getting an old bike with a 1" headtube,i dont like the look of the quill stem, can i ,or is there forks and headsets to fit the 1" to convert to aheadset, thanks paul
not quite sure what your after, but.
Forks, you will have a problem getting any decent 26" mtb forks with a one inch steerer. I have spare rockshox indy steerer that could be made into a set of rigid forks if your interested. Marzocchi did list one inch forks but they are IMO crap, far to long for any bike with a 1" steerer. You may be able to get something out of Magura, White Bros or DT, but i am not sure if they have such stuff even to special order anymore.
I am using a king ahead stem on my bonty which is also 1" and i believe they are still listed, in the past i used a campag record headset. So they do exist but may have to look at road kit rather than mtb.
Or i have a quill adapter that allows a 1 1/8th ahead stem to be used as a 1" quill stem. I assume such things are still made, not light though.
Pace always used to have replaceable steerers, and sold 1" steerer tubes aftermarket. You may be able to pick up an old set.
I sold my wife's Cannondale which had a 1" head tube on here and the bloke who bought it fitted some Pace forks (Zedsdead, I think it was).
So it's doable. But classifieds might be your best route.
Yes it is possible. As DezB says, I bought his wife's Cannondale for my wife (she loves it by the way - thanks Dez) and fitted Pace RC36 which I had. You use Pace's 1" steerer with it - they were designed for either size and there's a spacer you use for the 1".
At the top end I use 1" spacers and there is a sleeve you can buy so that you can buy regular 1 1/8" stems which gives you far more choice - I did this with my own Fat Chance.
