You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Doing a mini road trip early July.Which is the better route?Similar distance, but skyline has twice the accent.
Which do you prefer?
Cheers John.
Both of them 🙂 Makes a brilliant day out.
Afan is my local, so have ridden them a lot. For me W2 feels like a trail centre trail, and Skyline feels more like a big day out - as it's away from the crowds. If you do the full Skyline - so not August or July shortcuts, then there is a lot of Fireroad - one to miss in the very bad weather.
All of Skyline is now open, including Handy Andy - which has been closed for about three years or more, but for me Skyline has the better singletrack - it feels more natural and bedded in, as they're not ridden as much as Whites or Y Wall.
If you start at Glyncorrwg you could to Skyline and finish on the Whites - that'd make a good day out, and you'd get in a lot of what Afan has to offer.
W2 is the easier (less climbing) and more of a technical/fun trail.
Skyline is a beast of a ride and gets quite remote with some long fireroad climbs with great views on a clear day.
I love them both.
Also depends what bike you are on. Wouldn't fancy the skyline on a bigger 160mm bike.
skyline has twice the accent
True - you'll hear nothing but London accents at the top of the Whites climb on a weekend.
IGMC.
W2 way more fun IMHO but I do enjoy Skyline as well. Nice to see its open again. Frankly over the winter I didnt bother as so much was closed.
Big day out? Black mountain route or Quantocks. Quantocks has loads of great riding to offer. Just explore any combe or bike tracks leading down hill 😉
Believe the last 2 sections of Whites (Goodwood/Darkside) are currently closed for foresting for info.
if you do a search this gets asked most weeks, briefly Skyline open exposed, better views, quieter and probably the best decent at Afan.
W2 more technical but far busier.
Much prefer Skyline myself
Been there quite a few times and miss the Penhydd. But, for me, the Skyline trail has much the better descents (the last 6km down are brilliant) and seems to flow better but has all the fireroad trails round the back end that can get a bit boring - you can always use the shortcuts to miss some of that out though. W2 is good but I've always struggled to find a decent flow on Whites level, energy especially seems to promise a lot but doesn't quite do it right. The Wall is a great trial too though.
You could always do what we did last time and do the start of W2 from Glyncorrwg, do the black run and windy point then head over, finish the Wall and trundle back on the cycleway and stop at the boozer by the bridge for a swift half before getting back to Glyncorrwg centre!
