Me and the wife have a long weekend next week and where planning on taking the tent to South Wales and camping at Afan.

However I spotted a post from the MTB Ranger South Wales on Facebook saying that the following closures/diversions will be in effect, The Restington Palace & Helter Skelter on the Blade trail, The Zig Zags & Corker on the Wall and Goodwood section on the Whites Level.

I've only ever been to Afan twice and not for a couple of years so just wondered if the closures will make a massive difference to the routes or will we not be missing much? We'll go elsewhere if they are.

Sadly yes.

The Wall Diversion means the final ‘big descent’ is replaced by a fire road.

‘Goodwood’ on whites is the ‘north shore’ bit which I’ve never been a fan of, but the diversion was a bit of a buggy slog last time it was closed.

I don’t know Blade well enough to comment.

I wouldn't worry about those closures on the Blade or Whites.

But as above, with Zig Zags missing on the Wall I'd give it a miss in favour of one of the others!

Thanks guys, good info, will see what others say and maybe save Afan for another weekend.

To be fair the last descent on the wall isn't too different from a fire road from my memory of it. The only challenge there is vertigo because it's narrow and on a very large slope but it's not really technical or fun. The other end coming down from Blade etc. at least have big rocks to play on, although still not the most exciting use of altitude!

Assume S4 is closed then too?

Isn't the final descent on the wall pretty much the entire point of riding the wall? (is the #enduro black option that runs parallel still open?)

Wanted to go this weekend, only ever been once and rode w2. Will look at a map to see how much is affected. Better find a back up plan just in case!

marksnook, this is the full facebook post:

Mtb Ranger South Wales

We held back a few operations to keep the Easter holidays clear with all #MTB trails in #Afan fully open apart from the Stage 4 event trail. However now we are going to have to put up with a few weeks of disruption as a result.

First up the Blade trail: The Restington Palace and Helter Skelter sections are diverted for around two weeks from 16/04/18 due to forestry operations. Please follow the Yellow diversions along the forest road for around 500m to re-join the trail at the track leading to Hokey Kokey. Take 'extra care' on the diversion route as it passes next to the harvesting site. Please also give way to all vehicles.

The Blue Scar & Pehydd trails forest road climbs are getting upgraded, work will also start Monday and will last for 2-3 weeks. The diversion will take you over to the forest road on the other side of the valley from the underpass to the top of both trails.

Please let us know if there are any issues with the diversions? The Zig Zags and Corker section on the Wall and Goodwood section on the Whites Level are all currently fully open however they will also have diversions again in the next few weeks. We will try to minimise the disruption as ever. Please bare with us while we cary out the forest operations.

Check out the Afan Forest Park page on MB Wales for the latest info on individual trails here:

Reading it again, the Whites Level & Wall diversions 'might' not be in force by this weekend, if that's the case I think we'll still head down.

So the copy and paste thing is still an issue, lets try again!

I hope it is all done by half term as I was planning a ride after BPW the day before.

How busy does it get at weekends? I have never been before.

I'm guessing w2 is looking open at the minute then. Cheers homer. Been trying to get a load of our guys there for a while now!

@nopunk Afan never gets "busy" apart from the climbs which are narrow so people tend to bunch up, often because people have bikes setup for not climbing due to uplifts like BPW. Once you're up the climbs though you'll either overtake or be overtaken and you'll probably not see many other riders from that point on due to the sheer scale of Afan. There are enough breaks in the narrow trails that even if you do see another rider you'll be able to get past or get overtaken within a minute or two as long as everyone is courteous and pulls over where safe. In my experience the Glyncorrwg end is quieter but bunches up more on the climb while the other end is busier but with wider trails so it's less noticeable.

Wherever you go though, busy is not an issue at all for Afan.
