Anyone heard this news yet? Something to do with diseased trees. A number of us have booked accomodation in the area so looks like we're going anyway. Does anyone know how wide spread the problem is? Will other areas be open?

I was going to do the 75/100k, I'll probably go up around those dates, if I'm still free and do Whites/W2.

They've had the disease for a while now, I guess it must be getting worse!?

Are there any maps about that show the no-go areas due to the disease?

I believe its about everywhere, which is why for the last couple of years they ask all mtb'ers to wash their bikes before going home.. Not seen many signs saying this tho.

So how come it's severe enough to cancel the Monster for it? Can't they just ask everyone to wash their tyres?

i've got a group entered into this, with accomodation. Where are you hearing that its cancelled?
And if it's not cancelled, is it being re-routed onto a load of fireroad, again.

The final Gravity Enduro is being held at Afan. Anyone heard if that's still going ahead?

Rondo
Have been to afan recently and met with FC our Enduro does not run within the affected areas, although 1 proposed stage did, which was a bit of a bugger.
Will be there weekend of 20th 21st August on reccie ride
Cheers
Steve

Bugger .... I've been training up for this one.
For me it was a personal challenge to complete the 100k.
I might just have another glass of wine now

A little disappointed to find out this way (page 3 of this forum) rather than an email from the organisers. Pretty poor really still the money can go to charity.

I'm still curious as to why this event seems to be the only thing affected by this. The trail centres are still open and other events are going ahead.

At a guess, the proposed route was billed as using a lot of unofficial trails, so would cover a lot of forest not used by many other events and it is these bits of forest that are diseased.

It's a logical assumption. Does that mean the route planning for the Gravity is dramatically different from that of the Monster?

I did get an email from the organizers on Thursday. It was a real shame, was one of my best events last year. I would imagine the Gravity route is a lot different to the Monster.

Everyone who entered was suppose to have been contacted by Macmillan, they handle the entries the money and are the only people with the entrants details...

Its not a situation any of us are happy about or a decision we wanted to make, macmillan have assured me that everyone will be offered a full refund.

We sat with the forestry commission about 4months ago expressing concerns that although the route had been approved through the official forestry channels much of it at the time was unridable, they assured us the worst of the felling was over and sections of skyline, tonmawr and the rhigos we use would be open in 2-3 weeks after the meeting, 14 wks later and nothing changed we were sat app 6 weeks away from the event with a large chunk of the route unusable and we met macmillan and came to the decision for this year we had to cancel.

There's also an issue around the whole of the skyline area as of the beginning of July the forestry have handed over the area from Glyncorrwg upto the rhigos and bwlch to the contractors of the new wind farm, we can't find out when the felling and work starts for this it could have been last week it could be today it may not be for another 4months...

Its frustrating all round i appreciate that non of this changes anything for you guys just hoping to try and explain why the decision had to be made..

Can't apologise enough to anyone who had entered...

Colin @ Rush cycles

Would just add its not so much the disease though there still are areas that effects its the general felling in the afan area unfortunately most of the trees are at the felling age, i've been riding around afan argoed for about 20yrs and the felling at the moment is as bad as its ever been, fingers crossed its all sorted by next year...

Does this mean that the wind farm is going ahead now?

The windfarm is definatly going ahead, before Skyline is destroyed though, there are plans to create an alternative skyline that drops down into the resolven area...
