You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
After the thread last week talking about how the diversions were to be lifted by the end of last week, I decided to take a little trip down for a blast. It used to be one of my favourite Stanes.
My how I was disappointed. Much of the first bit of the trail has bedded in nicely, but the first real big descent - down to the bridge that crosses the big river - has pretty much turned into a big rain rut, with half the trail having been washed away.
Also, the 'remedial' work that's been done after the recent harvesting was obviously undertaken by Bodgit, Scarper and Sons - it looks a real mess, and at some points the singletrack has been turned into road-width patches of rubble.
Not to mention the effect of the harvesting. Where previously the trail swooped in and out of the forest, it now pretty much runs through what looks like the after-effects of a nuclear bomb being dropped on the place.
So all in all, I was quite disappointed. Not sure I'll be rushing back now 😥
That's a shame. It's just a few miles from my folks' house, so I will still be riding it in a couple of months, just to see what it's like.

Sounds good.
Sorry to hear it wasn't tarmac all the way round. How did you cope? 😆

and how do you propose they resolve this? maybe they could commision JoB to paint some giant mint-style backdrops?
muppet.
i agree that ae has gone off a bit over the last year or so.
it used to be one of my favourite stanes, but it feels neglected now. the new sections are poor and don't add much value to the original trail.
it's still a good ride out - the new cafe and shop are spot on too.
i think the updating of the other trails has left ae behind a bit and it just needs some tlc to bring it back to where it was IMHO.
the flow and magic that it had just ain't quite there as it used to be.
STATO, what are you on? I wasn't suggesting they resolve it. What made you think I was?
All I was saying is that the feel of the place has somewhat diminished following the harvesting that's left a pretty big scar on the landscape. It's a working forest, so I guess it's got to be done, but it doesn't change the fact that it's now like riding through a scene from Apocalypse Now.
Isn't name calling a bit childish?
Good call Kevin, and i agree that Ae has been ruined. Its meant to be a trail centre so should be able to be ridden by all abilities whilst having fun but i fear that has been demolished. For trail centre riding you expect better all year round kept trails whereas if i felt i wanted to ride natural i wouldn't expect anywhere near trail centre comfort. Some money and TLC will get it good again
