He wants a bike to play at the freeride park at GT, Downhill at cannock, but pedal around the Peak on.
has his heart on an Sx trail, but also considering a reign x

what do you lot think?

hmmm, peaks need something light enough to pedal up lots of hills

Cannock isn't exactly extream

and Freeride parks need strength over suspension (IMO)

Next years reign-x is reputedly under 30lb (bling build)

SX IMO is in no way light enough for all day rides, even if you out it on a diet the frame is very heavy, at least this years reign-x felt light once it was moving. There was a huge influx of them into the peaks a few years ago, couldn't move for them (or orange patriot-66). But then they dispeared as quickly as they came.

Hardtails are easier to build strong but keep the weight sensible, maybe an DB alpine? Easily under 30lb without geting expensive or cutting corners.

Specialized pitch/enduro? Cannondale prophet? Orange 5/alpine with a superlight build? Probably the most suited bikes to the peaks, but probably the closest to being the right comprimise.

IMO you spend 2/3 to 3/4 of the time going uphill, so its best to get something thats fun downhill, but isn't going to comprimise the rest of your riding like a 40lb freeride bike will!

Might be worth looking at a normal Reign with fork swapped for a 36. Mine's easily light enough for all day rides and the newer versions have an even slacker HA.

the reignx was suggested as it was 1800 on pauls cycles and has fox 36s and x0/x9 kit, plus laods of race face smatterings

I still think anythign over 35lb will make the peaks a slog. If you cant enjoy the climbs then riding there is a slog.

It's not just about the weight, slack geometry makes hills a pain as well, nothing worse than having to get off and push because your front wheel keeps lifting.

I'd go for an enduro, heckler, or similar.

A friend of mine has that current-style Reign X0 and it does climb surprisingly well.
