You don't need to be an 'investor' to invest in Singletrack: 6 days left: 95% of target - Find out more
Hi all, hoping someone can shed some light on the easiest (cheapest) way to get my old faithful hardtail back up and running.
Noticed the RH crank arm threads are stripped and not able to hold a pedal anymore. It's the original XT kit from an On-One 456 XT build from 2010, and I'm a bit out of touch when it comes to what's what these days. According to the bike build email its "Shimano XT M770 Chainset inc BB 44/32/22 175mm"
Can anyone advise what the simple fix is - replacement crankset? If so, would be great if anyone knows the budget equivalent components to buy and fit.
Many thanks! Chris.

+1 I've done this and it works well. Just got to find someone with a kit. Someone may have one on here and offer as a service?

Or alternatively buy some second hand cranks?
I have a set of xt m760s kicking around with plenty of life left in them - if you are interested shout!

Thanks guys for the replies.
Wooody - thanks - that sounds like a good option - I'll drop you a PM, cheers.
I did a set of cranks once for a mate who absolutely mullered the threads in his waaaay beyond helicoil repair capability. I bored out the mess, made a threaded insert then installed them using a technique which I think is sometimes called a Dutchman.
They lasted him , and I'm sure he is still using them 11 years or so later.
But yeah, unless you know or work with a machinist or toolmaker, second hand is the way to go.
You can use the threaded collars that hold V-brake (threaded stud) pads in. With them being tapered and having an allen key end to aid tightening, they wedge fit into the opposite side of the stripped hole, protruding slightly but not bad at all! You will need longer bolts though, M8 I think.
It might have involved some drilling out, can't remember TBH. It's a bodge, a solid bodge though, that definitely works, I have a crank that has been like that for years!
Helicoil or similar will work but tends not to be as reliable if the thread's used routinely- ie if you remove the pedals for storage etc. If you know anyone who does aluminium welding you could get them to just blob some weld into the thread then recut it with a standard tap, that'll give you something very like the original thread (assuming it's an alu crank with no insert)
Personally I'd throw new cranks on it, since the advent of bloody pointless boost, old cranks are even cheaper and they were always cheap.
Thanks for the replies all - in the end opted for a second hand sale from @woody71 - arrived today, now fitted and bike back in action.
Cheerio.
