Hi

I recently bought a wheel which had no freehub or axle so as it was not too expensive I bought a matching free hub and could not find an exact axle kit for my hub. So I bought one that said it fits all even though I 've heard st axles or Shimano have little interchangeable axle parts. I fitted it and after 5km the wheel locked up do to drive side cone loosening the freehub bolt into the cone. This was due to the cone being the wrong length I think.

I need help sourcing the correct cones at a minimum?

Any advice is helpful, except being told to get a new wheel?

Cheers

Nick

unless you can source an actual M756 axel, or old hub with axel, then you might want to post a photo of the offending cone here. You ca then try alternative cones, shallow, deeper, longer race options to find a happy match.

If it spins smooth with no play though, it seems doubtful to me that the cones is at fault, maybe more to do with the assembly of the hub at your end or damaged bearings / inner hub race.

Do you have at least one cone that works? Have you tried that in the other side? Are the 2 cones the same?

If you shop around you can buy a whole new hub for not too much which can then be stripped for the bits you need and still be a source of spares. If you can build wheels a straight swap would be best.

You can't strip everything out of one of them and fit into the other. The letter 'A' means a lot more than it seems!

If you pop into your local lbs (or call your fav lbs) you can let them know the code of the hub and point out your problem so they order up the right stuff. I think the 756 and the 756A freehubs have different dust shields but can't say for sure. If you have a 756 hub, a 756a body and order up a 756 complete axle kit, you might find that the cone on the driveside as well as the non driveside will not fit. I would order up a 756 axle kit and 756 body to nail this good and proper but price up the hub first as it's often cheaper.. if you can source it.

Yep, they look available online so for 32 quid you've got a hub with a skewer. A body alone would cost about 24 at a guess. If you buy a hub, strip it and fit two disc fixing bolts well into the shell opposite each other to enable you to tighten the jaws of a vice onto them so you can remove the body fixing bolt. No need to clamp the shell and damage it!
