It's almost a 6 of one scenario. I prefer Shimano components as a rule personally. Avid brakes never quite inspired me with confidence. The real question is your height. Because unless you're over 6ft the Cube is out. If I was buying, at somewhere in the region of 5'11, I'd go for a medium frame. The center lock hub on the Cube could limit future disc choices, but that's nit picking.

How tall do people need to be for a large? Or even an xl?

I'm about 5'9" and ride mediums, small bikes would generally be too short.

Obviously it's more than just the seat tube size that counts, but a 6ft bloke on a medium (17"/18") frame must be pretty cramped? Never mind the length of seat post hanging out?

Why choose another bike dale? These 2 no good for the price?
I thought a large is the right size for 6 foot

Both seem pretty 'classic' std cross country machines going by the geometry. Though I'd suggest even the 20" cube isn't exactly very big (long), going by the effective top tube wise figure (smaller than my current medium whyte), though might well be fine as your tad shorter than me. Neither float my boat though I'd personally (just personnal preference) choose the Cube over the GT. Not really up on spec vs cost, but nether look too rubbish.
For the money I'd go for a Halford's Voodoo Bizango myself, but I like 29er's. Halfords do regular-ish discounts if you can wait (you just missed one), sign up for the news letter.

Thanks Z1ppy that was very helpful. The voodoo gets great reviews I've just seen but I read the stocks very low cos of all the good reviews. Can I ask the advantage of 29" wheels? My main use is riding to work about 10 miles a day which I've been doing for 12 years and just bike rides with my wife on weekends and a bit in the forest with friends sometimes but nothing too exciting. I know I'm out my depth a bit on here as this is a specialist website so these bike look a bit poor. Just wanted to know if they look ok for the price. I'll defiantly look into the voodoo.

The Larger wheels roll over obstacles more easily, so they lose less speed to obstacles and rough sections. 29" bikes tend to offer taller riders a more "natural" frame geometry (feel), I found this to be the case for myself. 29er wheels, will only be an advantage on a road commute , especially if fitted with thinner [1.5] 29er road 'type' tyres.

Not sure this site is specialist, just too many ppl willing to take the pee, rather than offer anything useful (rightly or wrongly). I don't know if those are great value, but Paul's cycles has a great rep for offering decent bargains

Purely because you have chosen on price, and as they are mountain bikes that is what I thought you were looking for, they would be OK for what you later say:-

They would be poor for commuting
Me I'd look at a Cross bike for what you want 'appen.

Thanks dales I appreciate your response. To be honest I have been going on price and it being a mountain bike. Never really heard of cross bikes. It's worth me looking at and trying one

Try one they handle most off road as long as you are not hitting rock gardens or drop offs, I do a lot of local [southern Dales] trails on mine, swap out the tyres for slicks and it makes a very good road bike.

On sizing go read the thread on been sold the wrong sized bike. Height is a small factor. Medium in one model may be large in another. There is no universal rule.
