Received my new RS685 hydraulic brake kit yesterday and I'm in the middle of installing it. The brakes come pre-bled and I've taken off the rubber cap at the lever end of one of the brake hoses and found a brass fitting with a white cover. I don't know if the white cap is a seal that will break when I push it into the lever's socket? Any advice on what to do much appreciated.

Have a look at the attached (page 18) - not sure if RS685s are "easy fit" or not now (the previous 2 sets I've had weren't)
Yup that's exactly it. I can see a little bit of the brass olive (perhaps 1mm) and then the white seal is very thin sat on top of the brass part. So I just push the hose into the lever socket firmly and when it won't go any further tighten the nut? If so then that's magic!
Hi - I edited my previous post as I think I got three different types of brake mixed up in my memory!
I had two variants of RS685 - one with pre-bled hoses and fittings in the hose, one with full length uninterrupted hoses. My R8000 have a different fitting again (no olive fitted to the hose before inserting into the STI)
Sounds like your fitting is like the J-Kit fitting, but directly to the STI rather than to an external junction fitting.
I'm going to back away from this thread before I give you duff advice.
Worry not - i push the hose in up to the mark, tightened the nut, removed the lever movement plastic stopper (I think shipped like that to prevent accidental piston over extension) and....to my total amazement the brake caliper closed with a nice feel. I haven't tightened everything up to check that it's fully working yet but seems to be working so far!! 😃 Â thank you!!!
I fitted a pair of those j-tek jobbies a couple of weeks ago. Needed to cut the hose a bit to length but if you're careful, you can do it without pissing oil everywhere.
I clamped the levers back to the bars overnight to bleed and they're now ace.
Mine are too long but I didn't have the tools nor confidence to shorten them so I just have a bit of an untidy hose situation in front of the bars. Now that I have more confidence then i'll assemble the kit to cut them and bleed them (not sure if required if you cut them carefully but no doubt will need them in future).
I rode them 22k yesterday and even with brand new pads they were more positive and by the end of the ride (flat) with lots of lights to stop at the pads were working better. Do I need to properly burn them in or is normal use commuting on the flats ok?
I got the upgrade kit for the hydro brakes but an unexpected bonus is the crisper shifting the levers offer compared to my old 105 models (from a 2016 caadx - not sure of lever model number). I have decided to get the new R8000 front mech because apparently it has a much lighter action and I dislike the heavy front shifting of my existing front mech. Hoping this helps. Also got an RX800 rear mech to enable me to run a 11-34 (without a roadlink) and get the benefit of the clutch because I do an increasing amount of heavy duty off roading.
Really happy with the new levers and brakes - and the super helpful forum advice!!
