The gears on my 3 x 10 setup have been getting a bit noisy lately and I noticed today that if I pedal backwards the chain tries to move up the cassette ie from smallest sprocket to largest. Everything is working fine except for the noise and was wondering what the reason could be.

Check the mech hangar for alignment, there should be no damage on the mech itself too..
assuming you have both stop screws adjusted properly (with cable tension removed) you may need to turn the cable adjustment to increase or decrease cable tension until the noise stops
