After a bit of advice.

A mate of mine at work is wanting a bike to muck about on, won’t just be off-road, he wants a bit of road riding as well. He refuses to buy a road bike as he thinks they look funny. His budget is £500 - £1k. the only thing is that he is 6ft 5” and weighs 20 stone.

I was thinking a 29’er hardtail for someone of this size and weight. Are there any burlier 29’er hardtails going around? What are my options.

Otherwise I was going to suggest a cheap steel hardtail as an alternative.

Your thoughts and suggestions are greatly welcomed!

Cheers

Dave

On-One might make a inbred 29er Alfine 8spd up for you for around that price...

Giant Talon 29er in XL (22")

Range starts at £450 for the talon 2 and goes up to £750 for the Talon 0..

this will leave hm some budget for gear (helmet, shorts etc) and possibly a stronger back wheel building up (say 36spoke).. gear can add up to quite a bit of cash.

They both some with smoothish tyres so idea for bit of most stuff, offroad, canal etc

Talon 0 2012 £750

Talon 2 2012 £450

I just picked up a voodoo bokor 29 from halfords (don't laugh at the back) for £520... nice bike, better kit than I thought it would be in use. E.g. the brakes appear to be deore copies (from a couple years back) and work well.

(edit: i'm 6'4" and the biggest size is spot on, tho I flipped and slammed the stem, and put flatter bars on to get my ususal riding position, front felt too high for me as stock)
