My 2012 Orange 5 will soon need new transmission so I'm thinking (at last) of ditching the 3x10 setup & going 1x11. Don't have any issues with the current setup but thinking I may as well go for it & a new bike, even 2nd hand, is out of the question.
It currently has XT cranks & a Hope BB. Can I put a narrow wide 32t ring on? (doubtful is my thought) I know I'll need a clutch mech too.
Options & ballpark prices?

Thanks.

Might be easier to go a dedicated 1x crank but there'll be someone who's put a NW chainring on an existing 3x crank. No real need for a clutch mech, it's the NW chainring that does most (all?) the work. You *might* need a new mech to deal with the wider cassette.

No idea! The 2012 XT ones?

But what setup?

I would suggest GX Eagle at around £200 (Merlin) plus a 32 ring if compatible.
Check the BCD on the cranks and see if you can fit a ring in lieu of the middle ring as it would be in the right place for the chainline.

I fitted a 32 narrow wide oval ring to my race face triple cranks. I used some of the spacers from CRC to space out the crank bolts. Looks a bit neater than just using shorter bolts.

I went SRAM NX 11 speed but would spend a bit extra next time and go GX 12 speed to get the 50 tooth rear cog.

I absolutely love it though.

Merlin seem to have some good deals on at the moment. I got my stuff last year from a number of online and lbs as they had different offers on and it saved me about 50 quid.

I Googled it for you and it seems that XT crank 2012 would be a M780 with 4 arms in 104mm BCD. If that's the case then easy and cheap to find a 32t NW ring.

I found this quite useful for pricing

1x 11 links

merlin have some really silly deals at the mo e.g. XT crank + ring for £85

My 785 crank was a double and now runs a nw 34. I have eyed up a 32t against an old trek frame and it looks like it will fit. Not very scientific I know but may help you reach a decision.

Are all the folk recommending SRAM at GX level remembering to factor in an XD free hub?

This seems like quite a good deal, SRAM NX DUB Groupset

Wow, at £200 (assuming the £10 off code still works) then that resolves all the issues. Although the DUB bottom bracket is around £30 on top.

How does the DUB system work with threaded bottom brackets? I'm assuming that the shell is larger to accommodate the bearings. Sram's statement that "DUB is better than the excellent GXP" doesn't fill me with confidence - the only BB I've had that's worse than GXP has been a RaceFace.

I've a 32t chainring in the middle position of my ~2011 Deore cranks, works fine. You just need short crank bolts, or put a bash ring on the outer.

Until last weekend I was running a cheap £6 NW oval on old 2007 XT (M760 I think) triple cranks. No problems whatsoever. You just need new bolts or washers as the stock ones are too long for a single ring. I only changed because I got a great deal on M9000 cranks. I am using the SunRace MX8 11-46 cassette.

DUB is fine with a threaded shell. But too early to say about longevity.

Ta. Can you let the forum know when you get to 10,000km on it please?

If I get there yes but as I said, no idea about longevity. I am pn a PF92 anyway and still on Shimano anyway. Perhaps you should give it a go too and let the forum know.

Cheapest option is probably to grab a cheap Shimano clutch mech that can cover an 11-46 Shimano (or Sunrace?) 11 speed cassette, a Shimano shifter, an 11 speed chain and grab a NW 104bcd chainring and bolts to go on your middle ring position on the existing crank (assuming the middle is 104bcd and not something stupid like 96 bcd).

Alternatively just buy that NX Eagle groupset linked above with a threaded dub bb and everything is new then.

30T NW chainring on 2007 XTR here, with a boat load of spacers and long bolts.

@nickfrog - my 1x systems use Raceface cranks and Hope BBs apart from my commuter which has Sram which is the only BB* to have failed at low mileage, roughly 1500km. My hardtail has done nearly ten times that.

Hence the questions about the longevity of the threaded shell version. Are the cups the same size as HT2 and thus have smaller bearings or are the bearings the same size (but in a larger race) and in a larger cup?

So far the only reason I can see to choose a Sram crankset is for the improved tooth profile on the chainring giving better chain retention. But since I've yet to drop a chain off a NW chainring even that's a moot point and just means that Sram would be in the mix rather than a preferred option.

*The raceface BB failed at about the same distance, even cheap Shimano Deores have lasted at least twice that.
