Hello, I recently got a 18" 1997 titanium raleigh mtb frame. Alot like the one pictured at the top right of this brochure
http://www.retrobike.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?t=13549
Its pretty nice :-). Ive got various ideas and parts lying around already for building it but have a few questions, The plan is to build it as a commuter on flat roads for now.
1) Will a 44.5 a-c rigid project two fork be unsuitable and make the handling all weird?
2) What width bb should i get for running it as a 1/9 ? (Itl be square taper either 103mm 107 or 110mm from charlie the bike monger) or how to work out what width is needed?
3) Are chain guides worth it or just an old mech be OK. What about a race face narrow wide chainring are they good?
4) please recommend a good rear mech for slick shifting. Short long medium cage?
5) For simplicity i was thinking of putting a sunrace thumb shifter from chariethebikemonger. Any opinions....
1) slightly shorter fork would be better but that fork won't kill you
2) bb width depends on chain set being used but you won't go far wrong with a 110mm
3) a narrow wide ring will sort you out no problem. a normal ring without a clutch mech will chuck the chain regularly.
4) anything shimano in my opinion will be fine. something clutched would help with the 1x9
5) never used one but they're supposed to be good if thats what you're after.
Thank you toppers thats helped alot, never heard of a clutched mech but if it helps stop the chain falling off its in.
Is this one?
