Hi,
I recently tried out the adjustable chainstays (440 to 425mm ) on my kona operator cr 29 2019. I moved brake calliper, hanger and axle back and put wheel in. However, having gone from long to short, i now have an issue with chain slack. Would this be a B screw adjustment or chain link removal?
Thanks.

chain link removal would be my thought, you've removed 30mm of the chain run (15mm top and bottom) which is 2 and a bit links, or one inner-outer pair which you need the derailleur cage to take up. If the mech is short cage, as it seems to be in the picture I found of the bike, it might not have that capacity.

Options, if you're going to swap regularly - 1/ get a medium cage mech, 2/ make a chain out of 2 chains with swappable 'inserts' of the different lengths needed and 2 quicklinks 3/ check the tension in the largest combo (I assume single front so that'll be 440mm cs and big rear sprocket) and see if that's loose enough to lose the link anyway)

I'd do 3 first (but can't be arsed to reorder them!) and for 2 you could do that with just a single inner link to insert between the quicklinks but then you'd have 2 ql right next to each other - and although technically there's nothing against that for some reason I can't bring myself to like it.

When i purchased the bike it had been converted to 12 speed wide range as a sort of uplift bike. Would that change those options or not? 🙂

possibly, if they changed the mech with it. I've lost track of the latest wide range stuff, still on 11-40 myself so not sure what capacity different size mechs have now. What is the p/no of the mech?

I'd still 'try' option 3 first, set it back to long chainstay, and see when in lowest gear / biggest sprocket whether the lower run has the mech stretched right out or not.

or take photos and post up

yes, I can see it but need to see the whole of the rear end. From that photo I'd guess that taking a link out would be OK but on the basis of only the lower jockey wheel being visible that's a very unqualified answer.

What is the mech and what is the cassette?

To be honest I ran it on the short setting for a few mins and much preferred ride feel so probably won’t switch that often.

there's half a dozen varieties of slx mechs at least, and I guess (although not so expert) a few variations of NX cassette.

What's the p/no of the mech? And what cassette range is it?

(starting to think having leg pulled here)

m7100 has 41T capacity so you should be OK with an 11-50 cassette, but add in the effect of a longer chainstay which will do the same as having a bigger cassette and use up a bit more capacity and I reckon you'll be at the published limit. That said, I think they usually add in a bit of insurance to the published numbers so you should I think be OK

So next step is as above #3, put it in the long chainstay, big sprocket combo and either post a pic or see if the mech still has some slack to enable you to take out a pair of links.

Or if as you say you prefer the short c/s option put it in that and take the links out anyway.

Next question, the blurb says it's to accommodate 29 and 27.5 wheels, can you fit big enough tyres and your chosen wheel size in with the shorter c/s?
