I just got a fresh pair of fiveten freeriders, gutted to find that adidas are using a new last making the shoe a chunk narrower and across the ball of the foot, so for me they just don't fit anymore.
Also they look a whole load different as it changes the lines of the shoe.
Such a shame when a big brand comes in and starts screwing around with what they bought presumably just to shave a few pence of production costs.
Don't know why but I expected better from adidas
I'm really happy with my older ones....but got the kid some at XMAS and bearing in mind they only do the canvas freerides in kids sizes noticed a few design flaws... well basically the first one being only the sponge model that can such moisture out the desert air being the first one... given most kids seem to be able to get wet feet in the slightest damp...
Then given the usual issue drying them the kids ones have a stuck down insole...
I'm wondering if this is all part of the new Adidas shave a few pence off???
using a new last
What that mean?
The "last" is basically the template around which the shoe is built - looks a bit like a wooden foot.
the shape for the foot DezB, it's the mould as such that they use
Rather happy with my 3 pairs. Will be quite happy to get a few more when these eventually die...
Seriously how do you know the changes are due to Adidas' ownership? Do you have evidence that Adidas execs are jumping up and down if the FiveTens design office telling the designers how to design? Its speculation at best. Just because the change to the shape doesn't fit you doesn't mean the shoes are 'ruined'. Perhaps they have new anthropomorphic data that indicated the previous width was too wide and a narrower design would fit more people. As for 'changing the lines' styles change, get over it.

I believe that they are called FiveTen because if you get them wet, they take 5-10 days to dry out again.
(I'll get my coat)
Is it a case of at least 1size up, as per with adidas(for me).Or are they alot more narrow? In the market for a new pair of 5/10’s,case of try before you buy me thinks.
Let's be honest, for climbing shoes FiveTen have never really needed outside help to mess up successful designs (Anasazi velcro/pink/blanco etc etc). And who else remembers the days of having to try on every pair in the shop of a certain size, just to find the ones that really were that size?
Didn't Adidas buy them back in 2011? I find it hard to believe that it's taken 7 years for this to become an issue.
Sure your feet haven't just gotten fatter, OP?
Thanks mikew and whitestone. Learn something new every day 🙂
I did my own saving of " a few pence" by buying my child £15 off Sportsdirect skate shoes and not 5-10s for him to grow out of in 6 months 😀
Yeah I think I bought my first pair in maybe 2006/7 and they got better since Adidas bought them if anything - my original Impacts and Sam Hills used to take 5-10 days to dry actually and I used to tear the soles very easily, once you holed them they were bin fodder within a few weeks.
havent tried the new ones, maybe they’re not as good as last years, but I’d bet they’re a lot better than 5 year old ones.
Yet my shiny new Adidas Terrex CMTK shoes are wider than my old Terrex boots, and the comfiest and grippiest (Continental rubber sole!) shoe I have ever had...

How old are you? My feet are widening with age (43yrs)
They have been too narrow for me for years. The original low impact was OK but then about 3 years ago they made them narrower, thought I was going mad till I measured then had them confirm it. Sadly the new ones which just came out are also still too narrow for people with wide feet. Tried all other flat shoe options and none fit so left with my ancient worn out low impacts with bits hanging off them!
It’s definitely a change in the last I’ll post a pic if I can upload one.
yes Adidas bought five ten back in 2011, but now they’re trying to bring them more inline with the rest of the Adidas brand or more under the wing. Branded under Adidas Outdoor.
yes I appreciate styles changed and they’ve bought out other models including other models of free riders but then it’s duplicitous to say they’re keeping the same classic shoe when clearly it isn’t
”Our product line up has always been updated according to the specific demands of specific sports and consumers. While we keep many classic shoes in our line-up, for example the popular Freerider bike shoe and Anasazi climbing shoes, we are constantly analyzing and tweaking our product assortment.” - From Adidas outdoor website
'Perhaps they have new anthropomorphic data'
using a new last making the shoe a chunk narrower and across the ball of the foot
Sounds like making them a load better to me...
I doubt there's any new data, it's more likely they've just switched to a different factory to save a few bucks.
i guess it's going to suit some people, but if your used to getting that model and order the same again online you may be in for a shock.
Now I'm stuck with a returns bill because Leisure Lakes say there's nothing wrong with them.
So if anyone is going to order a new pair online, don't buy through Leisure Lakes I guess, make sure it's someone with free returns.

Look like the same shoe to me, the old one is so ****ed I'm not surprised it feels and looks different!
Your making assumptions that you cannot qualify because of personal rage issue! Models change, even when they have the same colourway. That kind of data does change and there is a change in peoples shape over time.
If your returning them within 2 weeks and they are as new (i.e. not worn) then why would there be a returns bill (other than perhaps postage)?
Whilst on the subject of Adidas does anyone use these?
On the flipside I bought a pair of the Adidas Terrex at the start of the year and they feel great on my slim feet.
To touch on Frozenwhite’s question they’re very comfortable, don’t act like a sponge in the wet, repel water (not waterproof though) and grip well.
I thought "anthropomorphic" meant ascribing human characteristics to no human entities.
Isn't collecting data on changing human size more likely to be human kinetics or biomechanics.
Not sure what animal reminds me of a Freeride shoe TBH.
I thought “anthropomorphic” meant ascribing human characteristics to no human entities.
Your applying human size characteristics to non human entities, e.g clothes, shoes, furniture....

Since finding the Adidas Terrex I’ve stuck with them and find them far better than 5/10 in durability, drying time and looks. Even got them in every colour now, I only buy them when there’s an offer on, usually 30% off.
Yet my shiny new Adidas Terrex CMTK shoes are wider than my old Terrex boots, and the comfiest and grippiest (Continental rubber sole!) shoe I have ever had…
also love my Adidas Terrex Skychaser shoes..also with conti rubber soles..

Ok I'll put that down to learning something new😄
Well my current Impacts VXIIWTVRs are on their way into their 3rd year. I used to barely get a year out of them before the midsole disintegrated. Seems better to me.
I don't like my terrex shoes. Waaaay too thick soled. I can't feel the pedal at all.
I'll buy more freeriders when my current ones get too bad

Got some Trailmaker GTX shoes and some Terrex GTX boots. Both are brilliant and I kind of trust adidas with footwear. When my 5-10s finally fall apart they'll be replaced with Terrex.
And yeah, the Conti soles are amazing.
How durable is the conti sole? Local Adidas seconds place has the Terrex x King for 76 quid...and look good. Would be an every day shoe for me so will the sole last at least a year?
I couldn't wear them before adidas as they were like boats with a hole in but now they fit pretty well and dry in just a few days

Clearly that's where your gut has gone; gravity, over time has developed hobbit feet for you. If you bothered to step on the scales occasionally you'd have realised you've lost no weight at all.
At the adidas HQ in Germany they have something called the 'Walk of Fame', it's basically a long corridor lined with shoes and clothing from the brand's history and it's genuinely quite amazing. Stuff like Muhammed Ali's boxing boots, Beckenbauer's shoes and a load of other stuff including the shoes they - a German company - made for Jessie Owens for the Berlin Olympics. Oh, and the boots Reinhold Messner wore to trek into climb Everest without oxygen for the first time.
It's a bit of an object lesson in how long adidas has been working with elite athletes and what an extraordinary history the brand has. The idea that they've somehow ruined five.ten to save a few quid on production costs seems kind of unlikely.
They also know a lot about lasting. The reason Salomon's trail and running shoes and their lightweight hiking stuff fits so well dates back to the point where they were owned by adidas, before then they had a fit like an old Welly ime. Anyway....
Any comments on the durability of the Conti sole?
I've checked the sole width versus three other pairs of free riders
All three are wider than the new pair, yes sure the tops will stretch but not the sole.
Apparently the Five Ten distributor is sticking to the "nothing has changed" line so either their quality control is now pants or maybe someone is selling fake five tens or they have changed and we're being told porkies.
Do Vans not do the clown-width shoes as well? If 5/10 no longer fit, there should be others? I say clown-width as they are far too wide for my narrow feet so they look like big balloon strapped to my feet like clown shoes.
