This is likely to end up as a 'Paging JamesO' thing, but only in that it relates to a Pinnacle frame. Sorry James...
Bought a Pinnacle Cobalt frame recently to build up as a commuter, since I'm riding to work more and had an Alfine-hubbed 29er wheel in the garage not being used. Only problem is, I've collected the frame today and evidently hadn't clocked the fact it has internal cable routing down to the BB, and the one cable stop is half way along the chainstay, which unfortunately would give a terrible routing angle to the arm on the Alfine.
So this leads to one of two routes to go. Do I:
a) Try and find a clamp-on/bodge cable stop to position closer to the BB to give better routing for the Alfine, or
b) End up selling the Alfine, buying a Deore drivetrain and running it with that instead.
Anyone got any ideas of whether option a) is practical and/or possible before I end up resorting to option b) and chucking the Alfine up on here?
Cheers.
You don't need a cable stop on the chainstay for an alfine. One is built into the arm on the cassette joint ( shimanos name for the rotary bit) and you use a full length outer
Sorry TJ, didn't phrase the problem very well I suspect.
Because it's internally routed, there aren't guides on the frame so it's not possible to use a continuous outer. I know there's the stop on the cassette joint, but I'd need an additional stop after the bare cable exits the down tube to be able to start an outer run to the cassette joint.
TJ has it. There's also a few stick on type solutions too
Yup, completely aware that TJ's statement is technically correct, but unfortunately it's not particularly helpful in this case. I'd have to stick a full run of guides on to install a continuous outer, as opposed to only having to install a single stop (if possible) to allow the internal routing to be utilised as designed.
Ah - I get you. Why not simply zip tie on a full length outer? You can get bolt on cable stops tho. I think I even have a few in my spares box. a few here or see if you can find an old skool bike shop near you. I had some campag ones which were very nice. I'll have a look for you if you want?

Cheers TJ, I think the aversion to ziptie-ing on a continuous outer, while I'll admit it's predominantly aesthetic, is ruling at the moment. If I'd bought a ratty hardtail frame to convert I'd happily have gone that way, but for once I bought this frame new-but-very-reasonable so ideally want to use it with as little modification as possible. He says, asking whether he can bodge a stop onto it... yes, I appreciate the irony.
I've found clamp-on seat tube stops for front mechs, so I know they exist, but only seem to be able to find clamp-on guides for the chainstay, not stops. Hmmm...
I am sure I had one. I'll go and have a look. Not seen it for years tho
Csan't find mine but this on ebay?
