I couldn't resist making a post about this.
I own a genesis datum, a great bike but it has a weird quirk. It uses a QR at the rear and a 15mm thru axle at the front for the wheels. I wanted to use a nice new pair of 12mm TA fulcrum wheels that I found for a good deal, but could not for the life of me find the necessary adapters to get them to fit. I got in touch with fulcrum and they found a solution for me for the rear wheel, but said the front hub could not be adapted to take 15mm TA. Bummer.
I spent a good few weeks searching for a solution and was increasingly coming round to the idea that I should just sell the wheels and start from scratch. Then, I found the perfect little adapter online, in the form of a threaded insert that reduced the diameter of the front fork from 15mm to 12mm. Eureka! I was honestly so relieved, the fact I had my new wheels sat staring at me and not on my bike was driving me insane.
I was so impressed with this product that I decided to partner with its inventor (in the US) and start offering them in the UK. I'm only a small outfit (myself and a laptop) and have bought a handful to provide to anyone who is also suffering from this problem. These adapters are widely compatible with many other bike brands too, so if your bike isn't a genesis there will likely be some form of adapter still available.
I hope this post gives a ray of light to a struggling soul, much like I was. Thanks
I bought one of those direct before you got involved. It solves the issue elegantly and the quality is ace. I chose to have my custom frame built 15mm thru axle at the front before realising the 'standard' is becoming 12mm. I bought the converter to future proof rather than for any other pressing need and as the bike is a tourer it gives me another option should I have a wheel/hub failure in the back of beyond.

a 20mm to 15 would be nice, too
Not having dozens of axle standards would be nicer. Why the heck is a 12mm front axle a thing.
Thanks for the support @boblo.
@scaredypants what bike is this for? I could look into it for you...
@nickjb you have summarised the problem in a nutshell. Having a bunch of 'standards' sort of defeats the point of a standard really doesn't it. Whilst the bike industry has been getting to grips with disc brakes on road/cx bikes and such like, thru axle sizes have been all over the place. A lot of bikes were produced with 15mm front axles, but now 12mm seems to be becoming the norm. Especially infuriating if you've got a bike a couple of years old and want to buy a nice shiny new wheelset!
they look trick but quite pricey though.
PITA was dt swiss who suddenly changed to a smaller 12mm centre axle on most gravel/road hubs from 15 previously. When I picked up a wheelset xmas I had to get my LBS to workaround this from a different angle.
a 20mm to 15 would be nice, too
100x15 or 110x15 (**** boost) and which forks? I'm looking at this now- I've got some older 110x20 forks I want to use with a 100x15 wheel that can't be converted to 20mm without using a different hub. The different threads in different fork lowers cause a PITA too, obviously 😡 To be honest it might just be less chew to relace the rim onto a different hub 🤣
Doesn't this count as 'Astroturfing"?
OPs been an STW member for all of 2 weeks, in that time 3 posts all linking to the OP's products... (Username is the same as his business).
Plus haven't various axle adapters been available via ebay for ~a tenner for quite a while?
If you want some STW promo why not just post them some products for FGF?
I think astroturfing's when an individual or company posts guff about something that they've only just latched on to but people are led to infer through their activity that they have been into it since the beginning in order to sell something.
@cookeaa Honest apologies if I'm not meant to be doing this. I've only just started selling these and my intention is not to create a big business, but rather to offer a solution to a problem that is absolutely infuriating and help other people in the same position that I was in. As you can see I've tried to make a post based on my experiences and singing the praises of what (I believe) is a clever invention, rather than just a bland sales post.
The axle adapters that you mentioned, available in the UK at the moment don't do the same thing as the adapters I'm talking about. They tend to fit within a hub to reduce the diameter from 15mm to 12mm, rather than reducing the diameter of the dropout in the fork from 15mm to 12mm. There are only 3 people in the world selling the same adapters that I'm offering, the original inventor in the states, me in the UK and one guy in australia.
I don't deny that there are potentially other solutions but it depends on your use case, certain hubs can be adapted from a 12mm inner diameter to a 15mm, but there aren't many, especially not on affordable wheelsets. It is particularly tricky to 'widen the hole' in a hub, but very easy to reduce it (e.g ~ tenner sleeve from ebay).
I can understand what you're saying and appreciate your feedback nonetheless, I'm trying to understand the best way to do this myself. I thought it would be okay as long as my posts were specifically targeted (e.g on the dynamo hub thread where I have also posted, other users commented about these adapters but were annoyed that they could only get them from the US) and this post, which is genuinely me showing how I solved a problem with my bike, that other people might also have.
As I say, I'm very much only just starting to creep up the learning curve with all this at the moment, what is FGF? I'm happy to offer discount to any STW members if that helps at all.
I've looked at these before, but can't figure out which one I would want for my bike.; It's a Rose Team Cross DX, about 5 years old.
What makes the difference between ones for each model - is it the thickness and thread pitch of the fork dropouts?
@adaptcycles this post is very close to the wire. Any kind of commercial posting to the forum will be treated with suspicion by not just us at ST but by the users too. If you have a product to sell and s tory to tell then get in touch with us directly at newsdesk@singletrackworld.com. If we didn't clamp down hard on commercial posts then that's all the forum would be full of.
