While tidying yesterday I absent mindedly put a 29er Flow wheel with a 700x35 fitted that is intended as an offroad wheel for my normally commuting CX in the back of an upturned 26er HT frame and realised it fitted well, with plenty of clearance. The frame has a 32 Float on it and offering the front of the pair shoes it fits too, although is closer to the arch than the clear space out back.

This has me thinking monstercross.

If I were to put an 11-40 10 speed cassette in, would something around 38T be sensible as a starting point up front? My normal CX is set 11-28 and 36/46. I'm a bit puzzled about whether I should be using a 700c gear calc or not. Also, if anyone else has done this, what is my realistic biggest tyre size likely to be?

Will a 700c fit the fork? Or will you switch forks? Pics please 🙂

It's a 29er rim and 700x35 tyre. Flows are fairly wide in road terms, but at 23mm BSD come in OK at x1.45 for a 35 tyre although it's a very different shape than traditional which may well be helping. Pics after dogwalk... frame is a mk 2 26" Soul and fork a 2010 Fox Float 32.
