Has anyone got any experience of making claims for accidental damage to their bikes through house insurance etc?

I had an off today on the road bike, carbon wheels and forks scuffed, eTap shifters and rear mech bent/scratched badly, carbon bars snapped. Also jersey/bibs torn and phone smashed.

If you've claimed did you have to get quotes from an LBS?

Is it relatively straightforward?

I'd expect you'd need a quote.

I'd be a bit surprised if the usual policy covered this.

Also you need to be acting as a "reasonably prudent uninsured."

I’d be a bit surprised if the usual policy covered this.

The cover says that it covers accidental damage to bikes at home or away from home. From the way it's worded in the policy it doesn't specifically state anythign about how it's damaged.

Will probably depend on your H/C insurance’s attitude to bikes at all and then to in use away from home. There is insurance that will cover this sort of thing, but it may not have been the most competitive at renewal.

Best advice is a good look at your policy documents. They should give you a clear idea of what is or is not insured.

Just read the reply that accidental damage away from home is covered.

So long as you weren’t taking part in any sort of event that would disqualify you in any way you should be fine. I’d be surprised if they don’t want someone to look at the damage, whether it’s LBS or someone they supply details of.

It's a bike specific policy from Pedalcover, I'm just wondering what people's experiences of these things were.

I claimed for my Giant Propel after it was smashed to pieces in a collision with a Mercedes ML. Paid for a new one on my new for old and I secured a club discount. Total claim was 4K. They also let me have the old one, which is why I now have two Propels after I replaced the fork and bars. Wheels survived but the front is far from true.

Royal Sun Alliance were absolutely excellent.

That's good to hear. Hopefully AXA and Pedalcover are just as good.

My only experience is from years ago when headed out super early to drive to a race, we secured bikes to each but not to the bike rack, bikes came off on a dual carriageway and bounced down the road at 70mph, HC insurance paid out (even for badly scuffed but still working stuff like pedals).

Interesting, how much is a policy like this, I presume it's not a household one, just bikes?

TiRed was the Mercs insurer claimed against?

FWIW last claim I made against a driver I just sent in pics of damage and links to equivalent new items.

Eventually there was a settlement with the other party and a lot of the claim recovered. But I needed a new race bike quickly. That there was another party to claim against was immaterial to the claim. I won’t bother you with the monthly premiums, but we live in a high risk area and were previously Burgled for 12k of bikes. Hint. It’s not cheap, but that’s what insurance is for.

Mine is just a house building and contents insurance which includes accidental damage cover and cover away from home. It's from Pedalcover who do cyclist specific insurance policies.

For me the Pedalcover policy was as cheap, if not cheapr than any other company with better cover for me.

I claimed for damage to an mtb frame by an airline - took it to LBS, they wrote a letter for the insurance company detailing cost of repairs or like for like replacement, money was in my account a few days later. sorted!

Good few years back but I claimed on home insurance for s snapped steerer and ensuing massive crash whilst riding my vp free at afan. Similar to above, paid out new for old and let me keep the remains. Some of which was scuffed up but okay, like shifters, brakes, pedals. How I walked away from that one....

The only thing to be careful about is that loads of claims will make you look like a clumsy uninsurable oaf - one of my mates worked for insurance companies (Call centre type stuff as far as I can tell) and said a good few customers got huge repeat premiums after claiming for every red wine stain etc. on their home insurance. It's there to pay for the things you can't afford to replace, you're never going to make money out of it unless you're very unlucky.
