Anyone have experience of any of the above and can comment on reliability?
After my recent walking accident(recounted at length 🙂 in another thread) and my recent health developments which may mean I need fairly urgent attention in the case of an accident. OH is making noises about me continuing to ride alone. I'm a little nervous myself tbh.
Riding alone is a huge part of my life and I would hate to have to give it up. Without tempting fate it's fair to say I very rarely crash. I do enjoy drops and jumps but tend to always ride well within my abilities as I'm not the bravest on a bike anyway.
But, I am well aware that accidents can and do happen so I am looking for something to give OH and myself a bit of peace of mind to allow me to carry on.
Any suggestions?
Specialized ANGi didn't work for me. Stuck in a loop demanding firmware update from the first time I turned it on, replacement was exactly the same. Sent back for refund. Good service for returns, encouraging responses to app store reviews, but no interest in solving the problem when I contacted them with further information as they requested. Just look at their reviews on their own website and the play store. I had, but chanced it anyway after seeing some people on MTB forums having positive experiences, as I didn't find any other option. Maybe you'd be lucky, worth a try perhaps.
Have you got a smar****ch? My Samsung active 2 has a fall detection thing built in which apparently then uses the phone to call emergency contacts with a location.
I don't know how it works as I haven't activated it
A link here https://www.tizenhelp.com/ecg-fall-detection-on-galaxy-watch/
The ecg isn't working yet though, apparently feb
ANGI did not work for me.
Example one, stopped for a mid ride break, sensor randomly decides I have had a crash and sends a text to my GF. No crash had taken place and it reported I had the supposed crash in a town 35 miles away from my actual location.
Example two, proper full on over the bars crash which broke the helmet. ANGI did nothing.
Binned it after that.
The incident sensor on my Garmin 1030 is also pish. Goes off for no reason many times but does not react to an actual incident. Now disabled.
Doesn't the new Iwatch do something similar to the Galaxy watch?
I think so yes, just didn't post as I don't really know anything about the iwatch
Cheers folks for the info and ideas! I hadn't even thought of a smart watch but sounds like it might have potential. OH has Garmin watch and it's always telling her things about heart rate. Could be some way to trigger an alarm if heart rate goes odd for some reason. Worth looking into!
I faced a similar problem and in the end went with a Pebbell. It's designed as a safety device for the elderly, but it has 2G coverage for all the areas I regularly ride and an accurate GPS. I got one form eBay for £60 and put in my own Vodafone PAYG SIM, so the running costs are low. It sits in my rear zipped pocket and to send an emergency call I just need to press the button in the middle and it sends a text to my contacts with my gps coordinates and a Google maps link. The coordinates are accurate to a few feet. It does have a fall detector too, but it's not reliable for cycling (e.g. using a dropper post can be enough to trigger it), so I turn it off. As a last resort it can also be used for a phone conversation to a pre-set number.
Solo rider here also. Aren't there phone apps for this too?
Dont bother with the Garmin incident detection as its turned into a sensitve bastard!
My Garmin used to automatically connect to my phone (no longer does this no matter what settings i use)
Then if you had an accidnet it would set off an alarm and if you didnt cancel it within 30 secs it would get your phone to send a pre saved message with your cororidates to your designated contact
Now any kind of quick stops seems to set the alarm off which you then have to cancel before it informs your designated contact
My ANGI had been fine, seems to work as it should but I've not crashed yet to test that bit. No false positives either. I do like how it maps where you have been so if your oh knows roughly what route you are on, then even if the location accuracy is a little out they can work out where you are. Other devices just send out a location and that's it.
@northernsoul bit confused by that Pebbell, from the website it looks like it has to go through their response teams but from what you say it sounds like you can configure it to call whoever?
The various crash/fall detectors seem to be a bit hit and miss then. I suppose if it only happened occasionally then it wouldn't be too much trouble to cancel the false alarms but if it was happening often it could become a pain.
Will keep looking for now. This Adrenal crisis thing is very new to me so I don't really know what the symptoms are to lookout for or how urgently I would need to be treated so I really need to talk to my specialists a bit more about it.
I have an ANGI that worked great with my old phone (S9) but with my new phone (Xiaomi mi10) it seems to stop working at about 45 mins into a ride without any notification. I have spoke to specialized about this but they haven't come back with anything yet.
The basic unit has a slot for a SIM. The company in the link (and other similar outfits) provide the unit with a pre-installed SIM and a contract for lots of other stuff, but you don't need that contract and there's nothing to stop you taking out the pre-installed SIM and putting in your own, and then using it as a standalone device without a contract. In my case I bought a second hand unit and put my own PAYG SIM. I've never had any dealing within a third party company.
I've been quite happy with it, apart from the compromise of not having a man down alarm. My motivation for getting something was reading someone on this forum recounting having a heart attack during a ride. For that, and incidents involving injuries to the body, it is fine as an alerting device.
I’ve got an Angi still in its box that can be had for £20 if anybody wants it. Not overly sure why I bought it as I never ride without mates.
@darksideby182 - you might need to exclude the Angi app from all of Xiaomi's battery saving interference.
@Flaperon cheers have tried everything even showing specialized that settings but it still just stops after 45mins or so. It's a shame as i really like the idea and it worked great on my s9 maybe i'll just use that phone for riding.

Nor I, I think I half read something on a thread about them. 😀
It's been a while since I had a Xiaomi phone but I remember having a massive headache trying to do something similar. There may be multiple places where the app is restricted, both in the "apps" bit of settings and the battery page.
You need to make sure that battery management for the Angi app is set to manual, and that "run in background" and "allow autostart" is on. Sorry I can't be more specific, it's one of the reasons I bought a Pixel.
Xiaomi Settings / Battery & Performance / App Battery Saver / find the app in the list or search for it / Set to No Restrictions.
The Ride app was already set to no restrictions, I have checked everything, it is an odd one as Strava works fine.
Cheers though.
Edit just checked auto start that was set to off hopefully this will sort it.
I asked this question a while ago after finding a bloke with spinal damage in the dark woods on my way home from work.
Recommendation was Road ID app. It's really quite good for a free Android app with no ads.
It doesn't exactly crash alert, but sends off a sms and/or email to contacts if you stop for a specified amount of time. Plus it maps you. I use it with mates or on my own. Quite funny really as it often goes off when i'm stopped chatting in a group mid-ride (loud alarm with 1 minute to cancel)
Check it out.
Road ID App sounds interesting
A big question is whether your riding area(s) have full phone coverage.
If you don't have phone coverage you might want to look at SPOT or other satellite technology. This has some information
