I currently run 1x10 Shimano on my mountain bikes. I have a multiday event in April where the bike will be laden and will involve lots of climbing.
Am i correct in thinking i need an xd driver to have a cassette with a 10t sprocket? I have some DT350 hubs with an xd driver that i could build up. However will i then have an 11sp cassette? can i use shimano 11sp shifter and mech, or will i have to go SRAM?
Im after increasing the range, so maybe an 11-50 would work and i could stay Shimano? Or should i abandon my beloved 1x10, and go 2x10?
If it's climbing and heavy load ability you are after why would you want a 10T sprocket - it's the other end of the range you need to extend.
well i dont want to compromise my ability to make progress on the flat. So if i can run a 10t, i could drop my front sprocket from 34 and still have a decent flat terrain ratio. The event isnt just up hill....
I run xt shiters and rear derraileir with a Sram 10-42 Cassette. No issues whatsoever.
For 10 speed, probably your best bet is a Sunrace Wide range cassette and a goat link or suitable range Shimano mech.
On my hard tail I have an 11-42 10 speed sunrace cassette, Saint shifter and an old 11 speed XT mech. They also do a 10-46 I believe.
What range cassette are you currently running?
And what length rear mech?
If you’re running 11-42 and a long cage rear mech you could buy a rear derailleur extender off eBay for a few quid and a sunrace 11-46 10 speed cassette which may be enough.
XD driver for Srams excellent 11 speed GX cassette (as I use on my 26" HT with XT 11 speed)
Or on an SG mech you should be able to run the 11-46 sunrace (or shimano). You will most likely need the SGS for the whopping 11-50 sunrace. SG should just work on a hardtail as the capacity is 39 but a FS needs extra to account for the chain growth IME.
