Not sure if I’m being stupid, pretty sure I’ve ordered the right thing. I’m converting a friends Boardman Team FS from 2x10 to 1x10, it has FSA cranks. I’ve ordered a 94BCD oval ring, the holes line up but it won’t fit, it fouls on the arms -

I had this. If the holes line up, then just file a little off the ring next to each hole. This will allow it to sit into the spider.
Not sure why they leave a bit too much meat on there. All the other AB stuff I've had has been faultless.

Some manufacturers do a 94/96 ring which will fit both. The holes are just slightly ovalised as they are so close in size.
Manufacturers are right ****ers sometimes..

They look like they would line up, tempted to get the file out but if it doesn’t fit right I’ll be wishing I’d just ordered a 96 and sold this one.

I guarantee as it's a mates bike that if you bodge it then in the future a totally unrelated issue will happen with the chain ring.... then it's automatically "your fault".Lol

That’s what’s in the back of my mind! I’ve listed it in the classifieds and will order another up.

I think I need more help. Are all 96BCD the same? Will this fit an FSA crankset for example?

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Works-Components-96BCD-Oval-Narrow-Wide-Chainring-M8000-SLX-Fitment/312421415762?_mwBanner=1&ul_ref=https%3A%2F%2Frover.ebay.com%2Frover%2F0%2F0%2F0%3Fmpre%3Dhttps%253A%252F%252Fwww.ebay.co.uk%252Fulk%252Fitm%252F312421415762%26rvr_id%3D0%26rvr_ts%3D43d727821690ac3c42f6a776fff5ccf2&ul_noapp=true&pageci=0d824426-ec76-4364-96b6-8ba36f9f17e2

Also as this bolts into the spider arm and not through it (opposite direction). I’ll need longer bolts I think, any idea on length? This is a lot more complicated than my Shimano cranks!

No that Shimano ring will NOT work. It's asymmetrical so the bolts are not at 90deg spacing.

A 94/96 will work as the boot spacing is correct
A 94/96 won't let you do 30t though as 30t likely has the thread in the chainring so fixed position is critical.
Here is a ring that will work in 32 or 34t
One up

Ok, so I now have a 96BCD Snaggletooth ring and the tabs appear to large on this also? The holes do line up though.

Snaggle

that snaggletooth 'looks' like it has recesses in the ring to fit the 'backs'/nuts of a chainring bolt, whereas your crank 'looks' like it has threaded holes on the spider - can't quite tell from the pic.

Yes the spider has threaded holes. Have I got the wrong chainring again? This is a minefield, only ever had Shimano cranks on my own bikes so things have always been straight forward.

(Doesn't help but) whenever I've had to replace parts on an FSA chainset, I've always just bought a Shimano chainset and gone from there 😀

The Blackspire website makes quite a point about that chainring being compatible with all SHIMANO 96 bcd cranksets. It doesn’t say so — but therefore it’s probably not FSA compatible, (sorry)!

on the plus side.. if you fettle those tabs then the shoulder in the bolt drilling will help center the ring.

Update, filed a few mm off each tab and it fits a treat now.
