Been talking to my dad who said one of his workmates landed on a free bike the other day and just wondered what the hive mind on this was.
The story goes that the guy in question heard the police outside his house shouting at a lad so he went to have a look, the lad was absolutely plastered trying to ride his bike and the police were telling him he had to walk or they'd arrest him. After a massive argument it ended up with him being nicked so he chucked the bike over the wall into my dads workmates garden and that was that. This happened 6 weeks ago now and nobody has been back to pick the bike up so the guy has decided enough is enough and has taken ownership of it.
Opinions??

Made me wonder if the lad had nicked it when he was aled up to get home hence why he hadn't been back to retrieve it.

He's obviously looking after it for the drunken lad, keeping it in working order, as a favour until he returns.... Oh... I see.

Brief update, police were informed, they got back to him to say he can keep the bike as it hasn't been reported stolen or claimed by anyone and it's been nearly 3 months.

Presumably the police asked the lad who was riding it before being arrested, who must have said he didn't own it, hadn't nicked it and didn't know who it belonged to?

He should keep the bike. If the guy one day knocks the door then give him it back.

@busta I don't understand the question? The lad was drunk so the police told him he couldn't ride the bike in his condition, an argument ensued and he got arrested for being drunk and disorderly. My dad's colleague was outside by now as he heard all the commotion and the police asked if he'd mind the bike being left in his yard for the guy to come and pick up presumably the next day when he'd sobered up and been released, after 6 weeks there was still no sign so he contacted the police to remind them as he had no room for it and was sick of having to look after it, they rang him a few days ago to say that as the bike hadn't been claimed it was officially classed as unclaimed lost property so he could do what he pleased with it.

@glasgowdan so your saying he should find room to store a bike possibly for a long term purely on the off chance of the guy coming back for it?
I think if he's not bothered after 3 months then there's not much chance of it.

As far as I'm concerned we've done the right thing.

Sorry. What I'm saying is the police know who the bike belongs to because they arrested him. You'd presume that when your dad's colleague reminded them about it, the police would have got in touch with the lad? He probably hasn't claimed it because he was too drunk to remember where he left it.

When did 6 weeks equate to nearly 3 months?

When I found an almost new Roubaix dumped in a river the Police gave it back to me a month later. I got three years of enjoyment out of that bike.

If it was a pile of junk I'd have dropped it around the police station the next day. Something I could use, it would have been mine way before 3 mnths, 3days maybe LOL. But saying that if the original owner turned up years later and I still had it he could have it back no problem.
Honestly all you holier than thou people really do make me laugh 😆
