New cassette, chain, chain rings, cables, outers, rear mech removed, and cleaned Inc jockey wheels, reinstalled and torqued up.

Can't get the bloody thing indexed, all over the show, shifters are 8 speed also but have a 9th click?? Shifts onto the bigger cogs but drops back, shifter cable tension to sort it and then it won't shift back down 🤷

To put it bluntly - doing my bastard head in!

9 clicks isn't right . Should only be 7 clicks if an. 8 speed shifter

Where did you find an 8speed campag cassette in 5mm spacing ?

Fyi a Shimano 8spwed is close at 4.8mm but won't work happy .... I remember 8speed campag being a chore to find when I was a mech 10 or so years ago. Can't see that having improved has it ?

Can get problem solvers pull adjusters pulleys at sjs

Id measure the spacers.

Miche can be hit and miss. I've seen more than one where the cogs ain't even stamped right

Suppose I could swap out the spacers with the I've from the old cassette?

I'd at least compare them to at least rule it out

Is it a downturn shifter? If so then sometimes I seem to remember that happening if the clicker plate in the shifter body is not perfect although I only really had the problem on suntour thumbies that used to loosen. I seem to remember there being no option to take indexing off on the 8 speed campag downtube levers I had.
If it's ergopower could it be a worn indexing spool in the shifter. These used to be available as a part.
Both of the above only apply if it won't work on the old cassette. If it does then Shimano cassette and shift mate works as an alternative, that's what I'm in the process of fitting to my road bike with 9 speed campag.

It's a normal bar shifter/hood

I've got the 2 index pieces here to make the 8 speed shifter into 9 speed if that is any good for you?

Assuming it’s a matched set of parts that worked previously? Campagnolo instructions are to set indexing from the middle sprocket, not the smallest.
FWIW 8 speed Athena is early 90s so nearer 30 years old - I had a bike with Chorus from that era. If you’re not sure about compatibility of parts, post a photo. Also try Retrobike forum if still stuck (sold all my retro road bikes)

Another thing I recall.about some campag was the cable going to the *wrong* side of the bolt compared to an equivalent Shimano. Set up.

As above check the cable routing to the pinch bolt.

You probably need to replace the G springs in the shifter, I used to do this annually to keep Campagnolo shifters functioning at their best. It's a relatively straightforward job, but requires disassembly of the shifter. Mercian Cycles were always good for Campagnolo spares. I'd strip it before ordering, as you may also find the G spring carrier needs replacing as well (they sometimes crack) - a replacement for this might be harder to find.
