For information as this comes up regularly. Just had to renew, M&S wanted £420 with all the bells and whistles, bikes over £2K no longer covered. Called the AA: £168 for basic cover (no accidental damage etc.), increased to £171 to specify one bike valued at £2.5K, including cover away from home. Other bikes up to £1.5K each covered at home without needing to specify, which works for me. Extra £2.50 for a one-off credit card payment.

Hope that somebody finds that useful. Of course, whether they are any good or not, I fervently hope to not find out.

I too got a favourable quote from AA .. I phoned to confirm a few details and it turned out it wasn't new for old(on bikes) needless to say I never went with them..

You sure? They weren't new for old when I looked into it either.

Today I have just been through a claim with Budget. I had insured the bike for £1800 specifically. But as it was not locked up at the time of the theft (taken from the back of my car, not fixed with a D-lock to a fixed structure) it was not covered. Not a good day.

I went with esure. Have to admit I don't know if it is new for old, just couldn't afford the M&S premiums anymore (esure and AA were similar quotes)

EDIT @ baden - have to admit M&S always paid up for me in the past, even when the bike was taken from the car roof (sorry 😳 ) Guess thats what you are paying for...

Got our M&S quote last week - £130, still need to add the >£2k bikes, but can't see anyone else is going to match them!

I've just taken a policy out with the AA (half my M&S renewal) I called to confirm that bike cover is new for old. For new or recent policies it is. This has changed fairly recently though.

If you will live in Scotchland 😉

That is contents only, they won't do our buildings as apparently we're in a flood risk area, despite there being no water anywhere near us 😕

Insurance
M&S will not cover my bike on renewal, spent nearly all morning phoning for quotes / online etc and no one will cover over £2K? I see some posts re AA will they cover for more value? Nightmare! Thieves should all be shot!

Likewise have flood risk issues on the buildings (never has flooded, nor is likely to, but it's statistically in the risk area).

Anyway, I cover the bikes myself in addition to the peanuts amount the insurers will give me and make sure they are as safe as possible. I do keep looking at specialist insurers but the fees are nuts.

Direct line insurance plus do bikes covered on your property to the value of the contents cover. For coverage on bikes over 1k away from home they must be specified.

Came in at half the price of m and s

Just moved from the AA to Admiral.
They were much better for insuring the bikes at home and away and for other nominated items, the AA were poor, it seemed like it was a big problem for them to discuss the individual requirements I was after. They also changed the T&C's from previous years on our contents insurance i.e. removed accidental cover due to my partners job as a child minder, despite the fact she has been doing it for years and we had been insured with the AA on the same terms for 4 years!
Admiral were slightly more expensive but the cover is much better.

Just insured with the AA now - £109 with my Cube at £2200 and the rest are fine as they are all under £1500 so happy!

hammyuk,

Beware, if they are not specified they are not covered away from home unless you add them to a specified items list, at an additional cost.

Checked that - Cube specified, others are covered up to £1500 away from home. You can't actually specify anything UNDER £1500 separately!
I did make sure I ticked the box for the "away from home" extra cover 😉

My AA was £79 dearer for 3 specific bikes in a workshop, AND global coverage, provided they are locked to something, no specific lock requirment, plus the standard £1500 "shed cover".

Just done my M&S, adding the bikes (£3k/£4k) took it to £260, a good chunk more than last year, but just MTFUd and paid it, too many stipulations on out building/away from home cover from the AA which put me off.

Hammy - where do you keep your bikes? As I read it the contents of the garage/outbuilding is £3K max. Therefore if your Cube is £2.2K that won't leave much to cover your other bikes and kit if that's where you keep them and are cleared out.

I'm having a right faff working my best approach - M&S renewal is £350 before every bike over £2K is added then an extra £50 per £1K of bike added. I started a new M&S quote and that came up at £700 contents only!

Still struggling to value my bikes though - all my bikes are trigger's brooms. Is the value the total rrp the components were when new (even if I bought them 2nd hand or massively discounted), what I'd get for it if I sold it tomorrow, what I'd have to spend for a 'similar' spec bike new today. I didn't spend £2K for my turner flux bought new in dribs and drabs, but is it worth more than that? Too confusing for a stupid person.

I think it all depends if you want to make out of your loss or are happy to replace with decent second hand, can make a big difference and easily doable

I emailed M&S when trying to work out my bike values for the renewal as they are a mixture of new & used parts for the builds.

Was told that they would be insured for the values I paid for the patts and not the RRP of a new model.

What do you guys do withyour bikes that you need them covered away from home ? My arguement for the direct line lad was - if its out the house im riding it.

Of course if its an excuse to leave it lying about locked to roof racks etc....

Bar commuting bikes- but if your riding a 2k bike to work andleaving it locked up outside you need your head looking at anyway.

Riding them! If insured away from home and for accidental cover you are then covered for trashing it into a tree etc etc. Or getting it stolen out of your hotel room when at an event (though I suspect that might be covered by hotel insurance). Or if it gets damaged in air transit.

Oh right , dont feel so bad premiums are so high if people want to gove them spackering it into a tree.

Thats not for house insurance to cover- no wonder its so ****ing expensive for the rest of us.

Just like car insurance doesnt cover you for track days

Hotels will not cover you, there is a general standard liability poster normally hidden in the basement toilet, I think it's £50.
Having been to Afan there I'd sleep better if the away from home cover was properly done.

The only thing to do regardless of the policy is to read the T&C's carefully and ask for/get written clarification on any points like locking up or definitions.

As for value as I have never bought a complete bike it is the RRP of the parts that build it - the cost to replace it if I had to tomorrow.
