Despite it saying on the internet that the Cape Wrath Ferry runs from May through September, it does not.
Apparently this year, the ferry man decided to shut up shop a few weeks early, which as we were on our way to Durness on the Great North Trail specifically timed so that we could get to Cape Wrath is a little irritating.
He’s also been less than pleasant to deal with.
The Cape Wrath Ferry website is not his and is out of date, including the contact details.
If you want his phone number to ring and check in person, then the best way to get it is through an image search for “cape wrath ferry sign”.
Hopefully you enjoyed the walk round rather than end prematurely. We had to walk as it was too windy for the ferry and it was a b'stard. 😐
We sacked off Durness, for a combination of reasons, including that if you’re not going to go to Cape Wrath, there’s not much reason to go there at this time of year.

One imagines most of the local population are feeling a little jaded at the back-end of another NC500 summer.

John Lennon memorial garden, no?
Had you texted him to say when you were coming?
I travelled with him this summer. He was perfectly pleasant and friendly to deal with.
He was, understandably, rather frustrated by some of the issues NC500 brings and was very disheartened by a lack of customers this year. I did gently point out that the website for him and the minibus was not great / out of date, and he might get more customers if he could improve in this area. He's a boatman not an IT expert though so he said he had no idea how to change his own website...
Had you texted him to say when you were coming?
No, because the number on the website is out of date. It’s only when I started googling and image searching that I got his real number.
I had checked on the visit cape wrath website a few weeks ago towards the start of the journey. I was told that he’d not given anyone any notice that he was stopping it, just decided one day.

I managed to get hold of him yesterday, and he told me he’s not available on the day we wanted to cross.
Fair enough.
When I followed up with a text this morning, gently making the same point as you, that’s when I got told that I was the problem who spoilt it for others.
Really amateurish and he deserves to have his business fail if he reacts to (very) polite feedback like that.
@Kramer well it's a shame you didn't read the message I sent you on here ages ago with his number. It's still there!
He was perfectly decent with us. Our problem was that it was a Sunday so the shop wouldn't sell us any wine. Fortunately the lighthouse would. Happy days.
I had spoken to the guy out at the lighthouse, who’d told me that I’d be fine in September.
Is this Michael who ran the ferry for decades (nothing to do with the mini-buses)? He must be in his eighties now. But then he did say his dad lived to 106 or something when i asked if he planned to retire. Super nice guy but definitely laid back, in a "if its running its running, if not then its not" kind of way. Quite the legend. Had a proper laugh chatting with him and he was super relaxed about coming back times "stand on the quay and i will see you and come over and get you".

Lols. If it is still Michael, he has run that ferry for forty years and if you do the math on crossings (5-10 per day?) x number of passengers (max 12 - full when I went) x £15 or whatever it is for the 6 month season, its staggering. Probs appreciated the feedback though.
Welcome to the highlands Kramer.

YOu needed to speak to the ferryman

Clearly I did. Obvious in retrospect, not so obvious in advance when there’s a website telling me that it runs until September and I’ve spoken to someone on the phone who has confirmed it.
Anyway, there’s no point in arguing with the “experts” on here any further, I just wanted to put the information in the public domain that currently whoever is running the ferry service is both unreliable and unprofessional and not to rely on the website.
It’s not ruined my trip, but it has taken the edge off it slightly. Otherwise it’s been brilliant.
The utter bellendery this guy will have to deal with from NC500 punters must be off the chart. I'm not surprised he doesn't want his contact details easily findable.
I give up. WTF is going on with the formatting?
