Why do I feel so draw to riding on frozen lakes ?

Ummm, you're in idiot?
I'm right aren't I?
Death wish?
Egomania? 🙂
bah, I was hoping it was a 2010 arse-shot montage 😐
and, yeh - unless you know it's shallow
Ummm, you're in idiot?
mebbe so, no one else with me would do it - but I think it has to be something about the challenge and excitement overcoming natural caution...
Death wish?
unlikely 🙂 I'd been jumping on it first to establish it was well frozen, and I kept away from the bit that looked thawed
haha! hey you only live once! Better than spending your day on a forum!
and, yeh - unless you know it's shallow
no, I reckon at least 3m deep where I'm riding...
I am with you. Spoilsports always tell me not to do it but I see no problem
I wouldn't worry about it SFB. I think most on here wish you would ride on more lakes, frozen or otherwise, if it stopped you banging on about it every year.
That's nowt in Norway we drove defenders over lakes and even had fires on them
Tho now I'm a firefighter I'd say your an idiot 🙂
Frozen lakes rock.
Well done Simon!
😀

I think we can safely say there was no chance of fire whatever :o)

**applauds**
I'm with Jamie on this.
I never understood how people drowned in canals etc til last year standing at the side of the reservoir when it was frozen, the urge to just walk out was immense. Like you say, a compulsion.

You're a nutter!

I thought you could walk on water TJ?
Many years ago I was stupid enough to get my tent buried in a blizard in the middle of the Cairngorms
I walked out round the edge of Loch Avon which is a proper big lake which was covered in snow. I accidentally trod on the edge abd went in past my knee. no ice just slush and snow floating on water

Later that day I met a cross country skier followig the same route. We asked if it had been hard getting round the lake. His reply "I forgot about the lake I just skied over it."
So if he'd got of his skied he would have died. A shilling thought
🙄I walked out round the edge of Loch Avon which is a proper big lake
No its a Loch!
Yes, you seem to have a strange obsession with frozen water
no just water, frozen or not :o) But I only try to walk on it when it's frozen...
but could you walk on custard?
but could you walk on custard?
that turns out to be possible, if it isn't cooked, and you make it thick enough. It's anti-thixotropic and hardens under impact, so if you keep running you won't sink 🙂

Must have been ice over most of the Loch - floating snow wouldn't support the weight of somebody on skis. It's normal for there to be a bit of a gap round the edge.

Someone has to do it Simon just to give others something to talk and think about - however something does concern me.......SHORTS in this weather!??
Stinky Fay
A rather unfotunate epithet.
sfb is the subject of a study into long term exposure to the elements on goolies. He's obliged to wear inappropriate shorts on all occasions.
I rode across a pond last winter. It had an ice hockey pitch marked out so i thought it was safe but it was a couple of days into the thaw. It cracked under me but my momentum saw me to the edge. It's only waist deep and I would survive but I proper bricked myself when I heard that crack! I hope I've got it out my system now. The hockey pitch is back this year so it's got to be safe right?............

Only one way to find out....

thanks but my goolies were toasty warm 🙂
i went on lake of menteith last winter, it was awesome, skated right out to the island in the middle.
saw a couple of guys out on their bikes, but what convinced me it was safe was the 90" defender driving across.
lake of menteith, "the only lake in scotland" google it.
im now hoping for a repeat performance this year, as i love pond skating.

A rather unfotunate epithet.
not really, Pete, who was also on the ride, is called "Stinky Pete" in reference to the fart-prone cowboy doll in Toy Story, so after she fell into the stinking mud it seemed highly appropriate :o)
underneath all the layers of mud and winter clothing I'm sure she's as fragrant as one could wish for 🙂
go away and watch the ice hockey scene in Omen 2
compulsion cured

I never use horror films as a guide to behaviour!
however something does concern me.......SHORTS in this weather!??
and your point is ... ??
When I was at primary school, a wee boy in a couple of classes down was sledging one winters weekend, and accidentally steered his sledge onto a frozen river, fell through the ice, and drowned.
We got told about it on the Monday by the headmaster.
I won't go onto any frozen body of water now unless I am confident I know it is safe. In fact, I don't know how to tell if it's safe, so I generally don't bother. Walked out about 3 metres onto a frozen loch last year, people playing out on it, but heard a crack and promptly went back.
I'd imagine being trapped in frozen water under ice is a horrible way to go.

right enough, but I don't think it at all likely. I only go on the ice when it's rock hard.
