Rock'n roll extreme, if you can get it, I got 4 random bottles a few months ago (they do still appear now and again) Not sure what I'm going to do when they run out.

No, no, no! None of this hi-tech spciality products, you just buy a tin of grease designed for motorcycle chains, boil it up on a little camping stove, remove your chain and immerse in the molten grease, then remove and refit to your bike.
The chain, transmission and anything that contacts it will be covered in a foul semi solid black gunge, but it will work perfectly - apparently

I use that ProGold stuff, it's a bit runny and doesn't really keep them clean but it is the best stuff I've found that doesn't attract crud, well to a lesser degree anyhoo's..

I'm yet to find a wet or wet-ceramic lube that this actually works with, are you using dry?

I'm beginning to think that this is the only way having read this. Is this as close as you can get to the excellent grease that comes on a brand new Shimano chain? That lasts ages and has no build up.

It's nothing like the OE grease to be blunt - it is more like black boot polish that you melt then allow to cool.

For clean running the UBS spray works really well IMO for road and MTB, but some have found issues with it's longevity - I'm happy to apply before/after every ride just for the clean running and good performance

UBS is very good.

Chain gets cleaner the more you use it. Not very tenacious though. One wet ride and you need to re-apply

I use this, Im in the FoD so muddy rooty. Muc off ceramic. I use sparingly on ea link I dont run the lube all over the chain, I think careful application works

Agreed, but given that takes all of five seconds it's a price worth paying.

This^^
I carry a small drop bottle of UBS in my pack for longer rides. means I can quickly reapply some what I'm waiting for my mates at the top of climbs*

(*ok this does not happen, I have no friends)

Still haven't re-lubed my chain since that thread.............

UBS works great in the dry on short rides, but I found the chain was making a racket after 50 miles on the road, and it didn't survive the 2 mile commute home in the rain.

Ultimate bike solution. Its fantastic. A couple of squirts before ride and after clean. Whole drivechain looks like new most of the time.

When it needs a good deep clean now I just spray with muck off chain cleaner. Hose down and re-ubs.

Weirdly the problem I had with UBS (aside from the rubbish tenacity) was it took ages to apply (yes, I like putoline and found UBS a PITA to apply).

Using an old lube bottle I'd coat the chain whilst spinning the cranks until it was almost dripping off, then as it's so thin I'd have to sit there twiddling the cranks until it dried/thickened.

Compared to any other dry lubes which lasted 3x longer it's too watery to cling to the chain whilst it dries, and when it does dry it's too little left to actually lube the chain for any length of time.

I really wanted to like UBS, I even bought 2x 750ml bottles of the stuff, but it's just rubbish as a chain lube, there's nothing good about it unless you like a completely spotless showroom clean bike (i.e. have time and enjoy washing and lubing it every ride), never go out in the wet and limit your rides to under 4 hours.

Cleaning the chain, chainwheels, sprockets, and jockey wheels takes about 5 mins. Just use degreaser and a chain cleaner for the chain plus a soft 1" or so paint brush to get all the rest clean and rinse off.

Then you don't have to worry about what lube to use.

Still find a drop of Finnish Line Wet on every link the best. A lube will never be replacement for a proper cleaning routine. Avoid hosing your drive chain down if you can.

TBH I think this is the problem I'm afraid. Having swallowed my pride I've looked at a youtube vid and they're using waaayyy less than I am.

It appears that I have to add "Unable to correctly lube a chain" to my list of causes of concern when it comes to my cack-handed efforts at maintenance. 😳

Should this post not have a sticky on it given the number of times it pops up?!

Anyway. GT85. Job done.
