Can anyone recommend a small (edge 25 sized) GPS unit that still samples every second.
For most of my riding my phone in my backpack is fine, but every now and again I like to ride short techy loops without a backpack and I know that at some point soon my phone is going to get smashed.
Minimum requirements are:
Small (as close to a garmin edge 25 as possible).
1 second sample.
Battery life up to 6 hours at the very most.
No navigation requirement.
Update to Strava via my phone.
Not a watch if possible. Particularly not the Fitbit style things.
Sub £200
Is there anything out there that fits the bill or am I asking for the moon on a stick.

I know it's a watch, but garmin 230/235 does all that and looks like a proper watch.
Bumbag. And it's soooo Enduro these days.
I keep on coming back to the Garmin watches, but they all seem massively overkill for my non-techy mind.
I'll have another read up about it.

I've crashed a lot of times onto a Garmin 810 on a bar and out front mount and it's still running fine. Tougher than they look
If you don't want maps, couldn't be simpler. Two button presses and it's tracking. Mine does 10hrs of GPS&HRM. About 10 days on standby.
Syncs with my phone automAtically at the end of a ride.
Smart notifications are quite useful.
What's wrong with an Edge 25?
Can't you change the ping rate in Ghostracer app, regardless of the gadget you're using, or have I misunderstood the setting option? By default it's 10 metres and 2 seconds.
Various internet searches reckon that the edge 25 uses a smart technology to sample which picks and chooses when it samples. This doesn't sound ideal for steep up and steep down kind of riding.

Don't worry, I ain't troubling any KOM times 😆
I've always used smart sampling, it's a non issue. It'll only increase the sampling rate when it doesn't sense a change between data points. If speed/elevation is changing it'll up the sampling rate.

You can get a bike mount if you really dont want it on your wrist and dont mind losing HR
I've been looking for the same thing recently,I almost went for an edge 25,but like you I read about the problems of inaccurate recording when riding tight twisty trails,because they don't have the 1 second recording,the Garmin vivoactive is the same I believe.
Someone on here suggested the Bryton rider 100,310, etc, the 100 is a similar size to the edge 25 and does have 1 second recording,I haven't tried one myself but most reviews seem pretty good, although there are some reports of the USB connection coming loose.
They seem to be available for £50-60 ,and £70 odd for the 310 which is a bit bigger.There is also one with mapping on,the 530 for about£135.Think I'm going to give one a try soon.

Cheers all. I've gone with the Garmin 230 bundle with a heart rate strap and will get a bar mount for my rare forays onto the road.
Hopefully that will give me some versatility as well as piece of mind about my phone.
(I really could not wear one of the fitbit, vivoactive type of things)

Are you sure? according to dcrainmaker it's smart recording only.This is from the review.

Yep , vivoactive hr definitely has 1s recording

It's a shame they haven't done that for the edge 25 as that seems to be the only criticism of them.
Maybe they will/have?
Can't say I have noticed any accuracy issues with my edge 25, but then I haven't really been looking for them...
Accuracy wise I'd assume it's the same as any other Garmin device (firmware dependant)... Can't imagine it's actually less accurate than a phone.
Do any other brands of GPS let you set tracking intervals?
