I'm hoping to get a better bike than my current one which is a Carrera banshee x 2012.

The only upgrades I've done is swap the tyres to nobby nics and the wheels to alex rims which has knocked the weight down to 14.7kg with pedals.

It seems to be doing ok but things keep breaking and it feels like a massive challenge to climb the thing compared to other bikes.

So I want something:

-is easier to climb
-which rolls over rocks a little better
-that can still vaguely cope with a down hill track
-that is no better or worse on the road
-which is a general do it all bike

Ive currently narrowed it down to:

1) Boardman pro full sus

http://www.halfords.com/cycling/bikes/mountain-bikes/boardman-mountain-bike-pro-full-suspension-650b-2014

2) Cube ams race pro

Canyon nerve al 7.0

Canyon nerve al 7.9

Id be interested to know your thoughts and recommendations. I'm a bit of a beginner and don't want to waste any more money

thanks
Christian

You've all ready bought a bike your not happy with don't make the same mistake again by buying an internet bargain that costs even more and doesn't fit or you don't get on with.

I bought the Boardman full sus last year and on paper it should have been great but i just didn't get on with it. Rode it 6 times around Macc forest and sold it to my mate who loves it for half what I paid for it as I knew it wasn't right for me. I also bought a medium prophet frame and built it up but it was always a little to small for me and in the end after about 6 years I sold the medium and bought a large and its ace.

Don't rush and make sure you get a test ride I would have known after 5 minutes I didn't like the boardman.

Another vote for an Anthem or Trance here, I've had 2 Trances and 1 Anthem (all 26ers mind), all been great do-it-all bikes, great both up hill and down hill, and fantastic value if you get an end of year bargain like the one linked above, my Anthem was from Paul's cycles.

I would recommend the Zesty.
My brother had one. And swear by it.
He's had lots of bikes over the years and says nothing comes close

Will be making the purchase next month.

I still like the cube but I'm wondering if the forks might be flexy?

The lapierre seems to have better forks which I like so this is still an option

Would you consider a used bike?

Obviously you'll have to work out which is best for you regarding travel, geometry, etc
Definitely good to get some rides in, but I still can't believe the price of these 2:

Commencal Meta AM V4 (£1477 + shipping)

Both Cube and Merida are pretty competitive in an LBS.

I'd be inclined to shop local.

Id consider second hand yes.

I have been looking at the whyte e120 scott genius 30 (2011) both can be found for under 1500.

I know they are 26rrs but i figure a brilliany 26er will out perform an average 29er?
