I need a light, not a super duper mega bucks affair. Its not even for offroad riding. Its for commuting. Id like to use it to see, and to be seen on unlit roads. Could you recommend something?

I have these on my commuter bike but do not cycle on unlit roads.

What kind of budget are you thinking about?

Something like this from MTBbatteries would be more than adiquate at 10% on lit roads and then bump it up for unlit as required. But at £57 my be more than you want to spend.

In the past it has been disussed that the offroad type lights are not the best solution for town/city riding as they have no visibility from the side. This can be overcome by chopping a table tennis ball and fitting it over the front of the light as a difuser.

I love my ebay Cree light, 1800 lumens for £30, you would pay hundreds for that in this country.
The only problem with them (by all accounts) is water. So mine has had the head unit and battery pack sealed as best I can in clear plastic.
Seems to work great.

Have a look at the Electron Terra 2 or the niterider minewt for a front only light more designed for commuting.

Philips Saferide 80 lux, see http://www.philips-shop.co.uk/store/catalog/led-bikelights/category/BICYCLE_LAMPS_CA_GB_SHOPPUB/GB/en
Use the code dclm3f36a5 for a 40% discount.
It has a proper beam shape for on-road, so its plenty bright enough, and doesn't dazzle traffic.

you could build up/buy a dynohub ft wheel for that.
makes sense for commuting.
