You'd be gutted when the DLC rubs off and you're left with a cheap looking black and silver chain!

If you peddle hard, does it drag the world around with you or something like?

Manager of my LBS "bought" one for his bling build - didn't fit it & is still in it's box for showing to customers to see their jaws drop, it is a very nice looking chain 😀

No, but if you reach 88mph you can go back in time and clear the obstacle you just ballsed up.

It's ridiculous, but I must admit a friends Izumi super toughness on his track bike is a lovely chain.

To be fair DLC is SO hard the chain may have a life many times longer than a standard chain - it only has to last c. 3 times longer to become more cost effective.

What worries me however is that if your chain is not wearing and is that hard what is it doing to your aluminium 42t sprocket that means you end up binning £150-£200 cassette after a few months...

I have one of those DLC chains which was £50 and the coating is very tough! Usually after a year the TiN coating starts coming off, due to poor cleaning and rubbish gear indexing with the DLC it isn't coming off...yet. Mines black n red, so half Enduro. 😉

It's beyond ridiculous bar tape costing over £30 and as for that chain 😕 I just wish STW were a bit more honest with 'Fresh Goods' rather than uncritically publishing whatever they get sent.

Nothing. That's not the mechanism by which sprockets get worn. The main reason for worn sprockets is a worn chain - with a new chain the load is shared by several teeth, with a worn chain the load tends to be taken by just one tooth. But it's worse than that - the tooth under load is the last one the chain is engaged with, so is under load as the chain rolls off the sprocket which is the point the wear mostly happens (due mainly to grit rubbing, not a hard chain which has rollers so should be rolling). A chain with a very hard coating which prevents chain wear should actually decrease the wear on sprockets as you won't be running with a worn chain.

Oh pish. Don't let your real world experiences interfere with the witch hunt.

If this DLC is actually preventing wear on the internal parts where it matters, then as jemima suggests it only needs to manage 3 times the life of those parts to actually look decent value.

In any case, I'm amazed that the chain has been picked out as poor value from that article which also contains a £30 replacement bit of plastic.

Ok, so it lasts 3x longer and therefore worth the £'s.

I get it.

In that view then it's prob's worth it.

Do they do a light blue one for my CX'er as thats gone through two chains and one rear cassette in 1 yr...

hmmm, last KMC chain I had was snap-tastic.

tbh fair I think you're only supposed to split them once and the removable link is apparently only good for 3 "go's"

I've gone back to cheap SRAM, which isn't very "new golf", I'll admit.

thats just a cheap copy, what you need is one of these: Titanium Chain

I know someone who used those. Reckoned that it lasted lot longer than a conventional chain and £/gram was actually really good weight saving compared to other bling bits.
