A certain ratio…
To be honest I’ve never thought particularly hard about gear ratios.
Mainly this is because I’m too fat and un-fit so I’ve got triples on almost everything!
Recently though the price seems to have really dropped on wide ranging cassettes so I thought I’d have another look.
What are the ‘need to knows’ before I order the obligatory SunRace set of cogs?
I’m just about to build up a 2010ish Yeti ARC and already have most of the parts but if I can re-jig the drive train I will:
I have –
Rear Cassette: SunRace 11-34
Rear Mech: XT Mid Cage (I think, definitely not short)
Rear Shift: Zee 10 spd
Now I want to run the biggest rear range possible (11-42?) but my gut feeling is the rear mech cage will be too small (up to 11-36 only?)?
Can I just buy a longer cage and the 11-42 cassette?
What are the options oh guru’s of the forum…
I use 11-42 on my fat bike with an XT mid cage cassette with a 1x. Not sure if it would work with a double or triple up front though, seem to remember Q&A on CRC stating that you'd need the long cage for multiple chainrings.
P.s. no apostrophe in gurus 🙂
They were ok, not really my thing, but a guy i work with rates to each as one of his favourites of all time.
Saw them live in 1988 when they supported New Order.
They weren't up to much.
P.s. no apostrophe in gurus
That was the worst thing about his post, of course. 😆
They weren’t up to much.
The GMEX gig?
Anyway, still one of the best live bands going.
801.
One of those bands where the best thing about them was the name.
Force is a decent album, tbh. Good bassist.
The GMEX gig?
Yeah. And the Pogues at The Apollo in the same week!
ACR were a bit meh though.
lifes a scream.
Also at the Gmex gig and not a big acr fan,Otis is quite a good tune though
The Otis comment was a joke, yes?
🎶
There a quite a few good Durutti Column tracks featuring ACR members as it happens…
Use the Golden Ratio or 1.6180339887498948420...
It worked for the ancient Egyptians, allowed them to build the Pyramids!
On a multi geared bike this is open to interpretation
However - if you take 34 tooth chairing and divide it by the centre (21T) cog on a SRAM 10/42 cassette - you get 1.619047619047619047... That's not quite Golden but its pretty bloody shiny!
That's actually too extreme for me - but then maybe its my abilities that are to blame.
All I'm saying is if Tutankhamen new about bicycles he would have been rocking a 34T chaining and X01
