My front brake is a SRAM Level TL on a Rockshox Yari and a 180mm rotor.

It uses a 20mm spacer like this

With the offset wobbly washers. One of the washers has cracked.

Is there a different type of mount that I can use to do away with the washers? And is there one for a 203mm rotor if I decide to upgrade (I'll check the fork can take it).

I'll be going to the bike shops in Les Gets in the morning to try and find a washer so I can go out for the rest of the holiday but would like to change it when I get home.

Cheers

Shimano mount adapters come with the washers. They are necessary to ensure correct alignment.

But are there a different type?

I've read something about an adapter that bolts on and then the caliper bolts to that, rather than using through bolts?

Yes. You can get one that bolts to the fork then the brake bolts to it. I prefer them. Just seems a better solution.

You dont need the washers using a +20mm mount like that. You just need shorter bolts to do away with them. The washers are for use with the spacer kits which are just tubes. Jaffe vtt should be able to sort shorter bolts out for you.

You can get a +40 mm adapter to up the disc size whcihnwould be ideal for riding there, a 200mm centerline disc will probably run you about 60 euros in town but i dont think youll find the adapter kit you need. Nevada VTT might be your best bet.

And the double bolt adapter above wont work with sram spacing, op has the correct adapter. Stupidly sram dont sell that adapter or the correct bolts to the public, its oem only.

The wobbly washers don't do anything where they are. The back side of the adapter will sit flat against the fork mount regardless of what washers are on the other side. Just use any washer you like, or a shorter bolt.

Sorted, first shop I tried gave me a washer.

It does look like it needs them though, the spacer is thicker at the top and the bolts are sitting at an angle.

I'll sort a pic later.

Yes. The washer is to allow the bolt head to sit flat, not to align the brakes.

Yeah exactly @nickjb I don't see how I can get rid of the washers without a different type of mount.

I'd change to Hope ones, it's a much firmer/better fitment, just look at all that unthreaded upper bolt before it actually makes it to forks mount, it's more of a pole than a bolt, awful design by sram, even worst than their gxp.

Cheers, I've actually bought Lifeline ones from chain reaction, about a seventh of the price of hope but the same mount type.

which shouldn't matter if the bolts are properly torqued up. It will make it a bit more fiddly to fit, but how often do you remove and refit brakes?

Not very often usually but on holiday I was doing it every evening to reset the bite point, which probably contributed to the washer cracking.

You've sorted it now, but those washers are the same as you get on V-brake pads.

Different bike to the original query (I'll be doing mine tomorrow) but does this look right for a 200mm rotor on a 180mm post mount fork? I had to add the washers under the caliper as the rotor just fouled the caliper.

Decided my other half was getting big rotors too.

Are you sure you don’t have a 203mm rotor?

Yep. SRAM 200mm Centreline.

Pretty common to need to add a washer to get the spacing right, especially when mixing and matching rotors, calipers and adapters. Theoretically they are all to standard but there are little differences. Looks OK to me anyway.

Cheers, I thought that it looked ok and checked that the pad is contacting the disc nicely. Would have been nice to not have the washers in-between as it would be one less thing to lose when taking It all apart in the future.

That's a weird one, Bigginge is right, that's normally a 203mm bodge, do those centrelines rounded edges make them a bit bigger and have you measured the rotor, l have those 180mm post mounts on my rockshoxs so use 180mm N.S.B adapter with 200mm Hope rotor and don't need washers, you can't beat precision CNC'd adapters, you gets what you pays for.
Something's not right. It'll do i suppose but it's not right, sorry. Good excuse to treat yourself or your other half to a new brake though, looks a bit rough, sorry again.
Hols2, going off your comment you might be overdue a lower leg service.
But I am guilty off messing with my bike too much.

I haven't actually measured the rotor, but it could be that as it's probably only touching but about 1/2mm, or the height of the rounded edge.

The adapter I've bought for mine, 160 to 200, is a tiny bit too big and the pads sit just over the outer edge of the rotor 🙄

I'm finding it all a bit frustrating tbh 🤣

I've just ordered a SRAM +40mm mount to try on mine and am going to try the SRAM mount with the CPS washers that I've just taken off the front of mine on hers.

She's also getting new brakes soon, wants to have a ride of mine with the Ultimates on to see if that's what she wants, or some grabier Shimanos.

Despite this starting with wanting to do away with the SRAM CPS washers ice just re-done the front using them and tbh it looks better....

Happy with that now I think.

Er, but... if the washers are on top of the calliper, they ain't doing anyfing except acting as spacers for long bolts. (multiple edits, got there in the end!)

[another edit]
So you could ditch the spacers and have a shorter bolt with a normal, thin washer.

Er, but… if the washers are on top of the adapter, they ain’t doing anyfing except acting as spacers for long bolts.

That is the right place. The bolts are now at an angle (due to the different length top and bottom on the pacer) so the bolt head can't sit flat against the brake. The angled washers take up the difference. Nothing to do with brake alignment like on old skool post mount brakes

I getcha.
Do wonder how out of alignment the bolt heads would be without them.. might see on my son's bike cos his are set up like that and the front was rubbing on the weekend.

Yep the spacers are in the right place and are needed, would be a few degrees out without them.

And they fit & line up perfectly.

I've fitted the SRAM +40mm on mine now and that also lined up perfectly. So once again, buy cheap buy twice rings true 🙄

Haha, hopefully it'll all be over by tomorrow. I'll maybe add some finished photos of both the bikes.

But yeah, for anyone reading/still interested just get the SRAM mounts, they'll fit.

Seeing as I know at least one of you is on the edge of your seat waiting for an update.... I give you:

Guide Ultimates fitted to a Whyte T130 with 200 & 180mm rotors & a Yari fork, using proper SRAM adapters which all lined up and fitted perfectly. Only thing needed was to cut the screws down for the rear as they bottomed out.

Keep an eye out for when my other half's gets new brakes 🙂
