Will a 9 speed front Mech fit on a 3x8 setup? Can't seem to find an 8speed, plus looking to upgrade to 9 later on.
I need a top pull with a large bracket 34.9?
9 speed will work fine.
Cage will be very slightly narrower so it will be critical setting the mech up so it does not rub on the extremes.
I thought you could still get Alivio 8-sp front mechs from Merlin or Woolly Hat Shop if CRC is end-of-life.
Fit a 9-speed chain on your 8-sp set up...it will work (KMC guarantee it) and the above issue melts away.

Cheers for that, I even considered running it on the middle ring without a front mech!! Dont know if that would work.

Why will the cage be narrower?
Cage is narrower because the outer links of the chain are narrower...it is only a few thousandths of an inch, but front mech positions are critical for avoiding rubbing.
Just look back on here for endless series of questions on how to set up their front mech without reading the instructions provided.
9-speed chain is 11/128"
8-speed chain is 12/128" (or commonly called 3/32")

Ok good answer, so why do people on here constantly say that you can't run an 8 speed front mech on 9 speed or a 9 speed front mech on 10 speed?
benjii19, just try it with the chain you have.
If you change your chain you can bet your life it will skip on the old cassette unless its only done very little work.
