Looking to upgrade the heavy 550g 26x20 (hxw) mm alu clinchers on my new old Pinarello Cadore fair weather commuter bike, but also not spend too much money on a bike that will be locked on the street a lot (it cost me £450).
Reckon a pair of 38x25mm 3k weave glossy (easier to clean) w basalt surface carbon clinchers are what I need, around 450g -that's 200 rolling grams gone with some added aero benefit and increased effective tire width. Braking probably sucks in the wet but I don't ride in the wet hah, plus it's flat where I live so I don't brake that hard.
Judging by the reviews these are perfectly ok, or?
My 320g Aliexpress 29er XC rims have been excellent, but with no local support consider yourself an intrepid test pilot.
My feeling is that they're totally fine and would be similar to my old farsports rims (functionally great, few aesthetic imperfections)
Might go 50 mm actually, haven't had problems with the 60 mm rims on my racing bike..

These statements directly contradict each other. The moment you add some bling carbon rims to you bike, especially deep section rims you can say good bye to the bike.
If you really must upgrade the wheels on a bike you leave chained up on a street then pick up some 2nd hand Ali rims off ebay or stw etc. Some excellent but unfashionable mavic open pros weigh 450g or dt Swiss 411s and then remove the stickers.
I don't think the difference between running 50 mm unbranded ali-carbon or de-branded mavic open pros decide if your bike gets stolen or not, especially if you use some common sense about where and when to park it.
2nd hand is a good idea but I can't seem to find any, used wheelsets yes, but used rims are rare to find.
Why not buy very good alloy rims instead of cheapo carbon ones? I dont understand the logic. Is the same with Titanium frames. Why buy a cheapo titanium frame/carbon rim where the workmanship and quality cannot possibly be as good as higher end stuff when you can buy a higher end steel frame/alloy rim set instead and know that the care, material and workmanship is superior.

^ this.
I bet there is not much in it weight wise.
And I wouldn't put carbon on a bike that's locked on the street.

Where can I get good 465 gram 50 mm alloy rims for 99 pounds each?
I would have to do some research if that's even possible. But I still on a wheel favour a high quality part over a bargainatious price for a product of less provenance.
Does your commuter bike need 50mm rims? You can easily get high quality Alu DT rims for under £100 and under 450g if you go with a more sensible depth. RR421/411.
To answer Haggises question, the reason is NOT to get better durability or workmanship, but to get adequate (for my use) durability and workmanship and more importantly extra fun: boosting acceleration, speed and aesthetics by complimenting the beautiful color scheme / paint job (not a fan of pure silver or silver and black alu rims).
It's simply to make the bike more joyous for me, I'm very keen on a fast and snappy bike even for a budget get-around-town one.
But I don't want to buy anything that'll fall apart immediately either, my feeling is that your no-name aliexpress rim is fine for my use, but looking to hear more opinions. Maybe a brand name one is worth the extra money.
I cracked a £150 nextie rim at the weekend (replacement was £255 with postage, not including duty). A £99 AliExpress rim? Just make sure your running the correct pressure and a rim insert.....
Oh and be prepared to pay for duty when it hits UK shores....
Cracked? Guess it was with MTB use then?
When I lock my bike up in town I put an aldi carrier bag on the saddle. Not sainsburies Asda or Tesco, aldi.
I'd not put anything visually appealing on a bike that gets locked up.
I put pink bar tape on and regretted it until it got tatty.
I was listening to the pb podcast interview with we are one who was suggesting that nobl wheels are rebranded light bike company which I found interesting.
i think a lot of the carbon rims were branded chinese ones. difference is that there's someone to contact if it goes wrong

Maybe some home-made Aldi decals for the carbon rims could do the trick..

Seems like you can get some customer service buying from the bigger vendors on aliexpress also (they replied to me next day), plus you have the option of leaving angry reviews which they apparently respond to. Harder to do that buying directly!

50mm? Nah you won't get a silly deep alloy rim that light but the weight is certainly doable:
10g over - 35 quid each.
It's Another fiver if you want 28 holes...
Or H-plus-son Architypes for £60 an end (470g)
I'm sure you can save a few more grams and Pounds (sterling) if you spent an extra five minutes googling...
I honestly wouldn't waste an extra 80 quid with AliExpress for 10 meagre grams and a silly deep section. But it's your money OP...
You obviously want the bling deep section carbon rims so just buy them. I'm sure your commute will be 10 seconds quicker.
But if you do them, then buy another lock to go round your wheels which makes them heavier than Ali rims no-one wants.
Deep section carbon rims on a bike with a lovely paint job left on the street all day. Good luck with that. Rather you than me
With Aliexpress, check thé seller feedback. I have a carbon road frame and wheels, which are 6 years old, more than 15000 kilomètres and they are perfectly fine. I had to change bearings twice on the Novatec hubs. And i am no lightweight..
