I'm gonna be replacing the drivetrain on my town/trailer/hack bike soonish, and wanted to give myself a slightly better top speed..

Currently running 32 x 11-28 (1x9)

I was gonna go 38 x 11-34 which would be about perfect I imagine, but can't get a Surly stainless chainring (or any other AFAIK) in the right size.. are there any other options?

Will it be much of a compromise if I have to settle for a 36t chainring instead?

All I can do is suggest some places to look for chainrings. If you ahven't yet tried them look at Spacycles and sjscycles as they are two places that have good stock of wierd and wonderful chainrings.

I was going to suggest the same two shops:

Assuming you are talking 94bcd 5 arm, then I have used these on my singlespeed bikes which have said 94bcd 5-arm cranks.

BETD. Great quality and relatively cheap too...a winner!
