After some barter with a work colleague, an early Genesis Croix De Fer is now residing in my shed.
It's in great condition apart from a tired drivetrain.
I'm going to keep the Tiagra 50/34 chainset (I had some Stronglight chainrings in the shed...) but want to get a bit more gear range.
Will the Tiagra 9 speed shifter work with any Shimano 9 speed rear mech?
I'm thinking about using an 11>34 or 12>36 rear cassette....so want to make sure I get the appropriate rear mech - i.e. one which will work with the Tiagra 9 speed road shifter and deal with a 9 speed cassette - up to 36t.
Thanks!
I've been using my Tiagra shifters with 9 speed Deore mech for yeas.
Works perfectly.
I ran 9 speed sora 3500 Shifters with a deore m592 rear mech perfectly fine.
All 9spd Shimano road and MTB stuff is completely cross-compatible. You'll do well do find something that will cope with a 36T cassette though (in fact I'm convinced a 36T 9spd cassette exists)
I am not sure if your rear mech can cope but you can get 11-34 or 12-36 9 speed cassettes.

As said a 9 speed mtb rear mech will work with your shifter.

I'd try the road mech before buying a new mech.
I've had sucess with 1 x 12-36 short mech and currently running 30/42:11-32 on a short mech.
might need a longer B screw.
The existing 105 rear mech is past it's best.
However, looking at specifications, it would appear that the Deore 592 shadow long cage can handle 32>36 cassette.
I'll pair it with a 12>36 cassette plus the 50/34 chainset.
Sound ok??
Nice find on the 12-36 😀
Run mine with an old XT rear mech and ? to 32t cassette.
I used to run Tiagra 9-speed shifters with an 11-32 cassette and an XTR rear mech and that worked well.
Alivio rear mech works fine too.
