I'm sure it's been covered before but my search was fruitless.
Currently running tiagra 3x9 shifters, 105 30-39-50 chainset with a tiagra front mech.
I think the stance width is causing the discomfort on the outside edge of my feet. Thought about trying and old Deore 9 speed triple up front but not sure if the mech would cope and if not, whether the cable pull between road and mtb up front would cause my plan to fail if I tried a Deore mech.
Any experience of such?
Usually the MTB mech requires too much cable pull and doesn't work, but if you have the bits you can try - a chance the tiagra mech might work (I have not tried that).

suggests mixing road and mtb front derailleurs won't work well, but then again might.
I was thinking it might be a long shot. Might be time to go 1x.
Or just try some 20mm pedal spacers
As above are these a simpler if slightly less elegant solution?

Saves trying to work out if / how the bottom bracket might need changing if road bike shell is narrower too.
I’ve got tiagra 9 speed double front brifter working deore triple front mech with mtb triple using middle and outer rings and limit screws set to stop it dropping in to the inner. Works fine.

From what I understand, doubles can be made to work ok because it's basically just set up by the limit screws. It sounds like triples sometimes work ok, so you really just need to try it and see if it's functional. Front shifting isn't as crucial as the rear, so you might be able to get it workable.
