Depends on how you’re defining 9sp?

I think Shimano CUES allows you to run a 10/11sp clutched mech 9sp, but it’ll need an 11sp chain, and presumably new cassette/shifter, which probably defeats the object.

Just be aware the Microshift M6195 derailleur only works with Microshift Advent shifters.

I've got a 9sp Saint with a clutch somewhere which I don't need. Bit scruffy, short cage. £20 posted?

There have been several posts on this subject in the past where a 9 speed SRAM shifter was used with shimano 10 speed mech modified with a spacer.

isn't MTB 10s different cable pull on the derailleur?

Can be made to work with Sram 9speed shifter, hence 'appropriate' needs a slight respace on cable clamp on the mech

correct, but MS is very cheap, here is one 9speed option of theirs for £17.50

other options also

9 speed SRAM shifter works pretty well with an 11 speed SRAM/Shimano derailleur without modification.

Totally - it won't work.

Did you read the linked thread? Others would beg to differ!

Can confirm that 10 speed shimano mtb mech works perfectly on the standard 9 speed sram mtb with just the addition of 6mm of spacer under the cable where it bolts in (and a longer bolt), to change the cable pull. IIRC you can also do it by drilling the arm and locating the cable differently but that seems insane. Washers or a little block spacer do an equally good job. (I've a vague memory that SRAM maybe had a super cheap 9 speed line that wasn't compatible?)

Basically 10 speed Shimano was "heavily influenced" by 9 speed SRAM including a just-different-enough-to-pretend-it-wasn't-copying-and-prevent-interchangability cable pull, so it's easy to tweak them to be identical.

You sure? Clutches came along mid 10 speed, don't think there was never a factory 9 speed saint with one

I once modified a 10speed Zee clutch mech to work with a 9 speed shifter. It is a bit of a faff as you have to figure out where to drill a hole in the arm. The accuracy of the drilled hole determines how well it works.

Do you actualy need a clutch mech? They are good at reducing noise but don't do much to help chain retention.

Great sounds doable even with a bit of faff.  Its going to be used on a DJ bike, DMR sidekick, it used to run a full chain device, but I figure these days a clutch mech should do it with a NW ring.  I have a few old mechs in the shed, possibly a zee 10speed.  If I can I'd rather use the stuff I've been hoarding all these years than buy more stuff

well remembered!

I machined a bunch of wee oblongs for the job, only needed 1 but I had to get like 20cm of the square stock so I just kept going and gave a load away. Still kept finding them randomly in the garage til I moved house, but could never find them when anyone wanted one 🙂 So the size got kind of burned into my brain

TBF the chainring does almost all the work, I reckon the clutch does 5% tops of the chain retention. (as we found out when all those first gen shimano clutch mechs broke their clutches and most people didn't even notice til they took the wee cover off). But the clutch is still nice to have for sure.

(the wee cheap top chain devices are ace if you've got iscg mounts, btw... They're bugger all use without a narrow/wide but once you have one, they're like the last bit that takes it from "really good" to "damn near perfect")
