Sorry, I know this must have been done a billion squillion times...

Is there a definitive answer as to whether 9-speed chainsets and chainrings will work ok with a 10-speed chain, cassette and rear mech? All Shimano.

Assuming that it would, would it be a conclusion too far to assume that a 9-speed front mech will also work ok with the above (and 3x10 shifters)?

I know there was a lot of debate when 10-speed MTB stuff first came out, but assume there's a bit more real world experience now.

thiking of doing this with the bargain SLX 10 spd shifters I ordered the other day from CRC after a timely PSA on here..
All I need now are a rear mech, cassette and chain.
Hmmmmmmmmm (scratches chin sagely).

rc200f8 +1 i have exact same setup.
also, on another bike 10spd deore cranks/rings with 9 speed everything else, all works no problem.
just waiting on my 10 speed slx shifters to arrive, would have been mad not to at that price!

If you want to use a 32T dynasis chaining on a 9sp crank you will most likely need to file down the spider to make it fit. Quite a lot to remove on the SLX double crank.
