Anyone know if I can still get hold of a 11-36 or 12-36 9 speed cassette? Pref SLX / XT. Still got my SLX shifters and rear mech both working perfectly, seems a shame to bin them in favour for 10 speed at the moment. Cheers.

I thought 11-34 was the biggest you could get in 9 speed flavour.

I don't think there was ever an 11-36? You could swap the ring on a 12-36 though- I machined down an XT one but it didn't fit as standard, I think if you get an 11 from another HG61 it's supposed to work... It's hefty mind

12-36 is useful if you just want a lower gear from the same front cogs, but it gives you less gear range than an 11-34 so it's not useful for widening ranges.

Thanks all, going to swap down to the Alivio range, it's going on my fat bike so weight is a marginal factor, crc have got HG300 12-36 for £11, bargain!

Mmm, think that might be a typo- in the text underneath it lists the sizes with 12-36 (and Shimano don't list an 11-36 on the website, just the 12-36) but in the order box you get 11-36.

Do you really need a 36? Comes a point where you are better off just walking!
