Just shopping for bits for the Spring refurb of my Soul, it needs front and rear mechs on top of the usual cassette/chain/middle-ring.

Just pricing everything up at Rosebikes and the 10-speed mechs are cheaper than 9. Obviously I'll need new shifters, but are there any disadvantages of going 10-speed? I'm running a triple on the front.

Ta!

Sounds like time for an upgrade to 10 speed. May as well go for a new chainset at the same time. 2x10 works very well.

All the lads I ride with who got new bikes with 2x10 have reverted to triples on the front...

Are there any issues with 3 x 10?

I'd say go for 10 instead of 9. Spare parts for 9 are getting harder to find. I think 2 x 10 is a great set up. Ribble cycles seem cheap at the moment

If you're messing around with front mechs you might as well have a triple at the front... Although doubles look nicer.

Only that it's hard to get it not rubbing a bit in at least one gear combo.

I liked it but I'm going over to 2x10 anyway, just because it makes more sense on paper.

Will be selling my m770 3x10 chainset in case you're interested, email in profile.

From what I can gather, the top gears aren't as high and the lowest gears aren't as low.

Not ridden it myself, but a couple of guys in my regular riding group have gone back to triples...

Thanks Chakaping, but the chainset is the one thing that's staying - only had it 6 months...

I take it my 9-speed chainset will work with 10-speed?

A triple has a chainring in just the right place for when you decide you can't be doing with a front changer at all. 🙂

The rings are a tiny bit closer together on Shimano 10-speed chainsets, but it's worth a try.

Hmmm... What a ballache, if I have to factor in the price of a chainset it starts to add up...

Has anyone tried a 10-speed chain on a 9-speed chainset?
