Can anyone advise me on which front mech will fit an 853 Sovereign frame?
I feel the need for a granny gear but I don't have a mech that fits the chunky seat tube.

Not sure on the 853 but on my Tange version it's 34.9mm
Just buy a shimano mech they come with reducers if its less than 34.9
Bog standard shimano mech on mine (old), pretty sure its 34.9. FAQs on silverfish site says 34.9 too.
I can't advise you which one you need but I can tell you that it is possible to get the wrong one. Top clamp, bottom swing, top/bottom pull XT mega 9 mechs deal with (something like) 66-69 degree seat tube angles and if you use my preferred (easier to set up/better change)top swing, bottom clamp XT front mechs you won't get it to work properly. You need to find the advised spec on the web or from the distributor or company itself.
Nope, top swing xt works fine on an 853 sovereign. As did a conventional X9.
